2016 Haddam-Killingworth Cougars Spring Year in Review

The 2016 spring sports season saw multiple postseason appearances for the Cougars, including one from a baseball team that came just one win shy of making a state final.

Baseball

Head Coach Mark Brookes and the Haddam-Killingworth baseball squad won three games in the Class S State Tournament to advance to the semifinals this year. The Cougars took a 10-1 defeat to Wolcott in the semis at Sage Park in Berlin.

HK finished the year at 19-6 overall and also made the Shoreline Conference Tournament. Senior Ty Schuler garnered Honorable Mention for the New Haven Register’s All-State Team.

Softball

After defeating Hale-Ray 9-6 in the quarterfinals of the Shoreline Conference Tournament, Head Coach Jeff Talbott and the Cougars lost 13-1 to eventual champion North Branford in the semifinals.

Then playing at Coginchaug in the first round of the Class M State Tournament, HK lost by the final of 6-3. The Cougars finished the year with 13 wins.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

Head Coach Dick Dupuis and HK finished third at the Shoreline Conference Championship, after which the Cougars came in third place for the Class M State Championship this spring.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Led by Head Coach Matt Diglio, the Cougars placed fourth at the Class M State Championship at Willow Brook Park in New Britain in 2016.

Cameron Garrelts took the 1,600 crown with a time of 4:24.89 for HK. Also, HK’s 4x800 relay of Ryan Argo, Andrew Meredith, Ben Rakowski, and Garrelts prevailed in a time of 8:09.15.

The week before at the Shoreline Conference Championship, HK took second place and its strong showings on the day included relay victories in the 4x400 (3:31.05) and 4x800 (8:19.15), along with Garrelts, who won both the 1,600 (4:30.54) and 3,200 (in 9:58.27).

Boys’ Lacrosse

In a Class S State Tournament qualifying round matchup, Head Coach Mark Richard and HK defeated Valley Regional 12-7. Playing at Granby Memorial in the next round, the Cougars lost by a 17-2 final to finish the year at 10-9.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Cougars took a 15-10 loss to St. Joseph in the qualifying round of the Class S State Tournament. HK completed the year at 7-10 overall and also made the Shoreline Conference Tournament.

Junior midfielder Brinley Anderson was a New Haven Register All-Area selection for Haddam-Killingworth.

Girls’ Tennis

At the State Open Championship, HK’s Emily Beck won her qualifying round match by an 8-2 final over St. Paul’s Victoria Kilbourne. In the first round, Beck was defeated 8-2 by North Haven’s Julia Migliorini. Donna Clark was HK’s head coach for the season.

Golf

The Cougars came in 12th place with a round of 363 for the Division II State Championship this year. The meet was held at Crestbrook Park.
