The Guilford fencing program got out to great start this year by winning five out of six matches in a tri-meet held at Guilford High School on Dec. 10. Participating in the competition were Marine Science Magnet School, Hopkins, and North Haven. All three weapons of foil, épée, and sabre were fenced for both girls and boys.
On the girls’ side, Guilford defeated Marine Science Magnet School 26-1 and Hopkins 15-12. Micayla O’Connor came back from a 4-1 deficit to bring the girls to victory. The girls lost a tough match against North Haven, 16-11.
On the boys’ side, the Indians won all three matches with a 23-4 final against Marine Science Magnet, a 17-10 victory facing Hopkins, and a 16-11 win versus North Haven.
Up next on Dec. 15 was Guilford’s rival Hand. As Hand does not fence sabre, only foil and épée were fenced for the boys and girls.
On the boys’ side, Guilford won foil 7-2 and épée 7-2 for a team victory of 14-4.
For the girls, Hand bested Guilford’s foil squad 6-3, but Guilford épée beat Hand 7-2 for a 10-8 team victory.
Last season, Head Coach Kyle Mezzi and the Indians cleaned up the hardware at the Team State Championship meet in North Haven on March 12 as both the boys’ and girls’ squads claimed overall state championships based on the cumulative performances of their respective foil, épée, and sabre teams. In terms of specific disciplines, the girls’ foil squad also took home a first-place finish. Additionally for the Indians, their boys’ épée team saw a runner-up finish, foil was third, and the sabre squad placed fifth. Rounding out the day for the girls, Guilford’s épée and sabre groups both fought their way to fourth.
Girls’ Ice Hockey
The Guilford girls’ ice hockey team opened the year with an 8-1 road loss to Notre Dame-Fairfield/Foran on Dec. 14. The Indians then fell 6-0 to West Haven-Sacred Heart Academy on Dec. 17.
The Indians are once coached this year by Gil Schaper. Guilford moved up to Division I of the SCC in 2015-’16 and finished 3-15-1 on the year. The Indians’ victories came against Lauralton Hall (3-2 in overtime on Jan. 9 and 7-1 on Senior Day on Feb. 17) and Hand (5-2 on Jan. 6).
