East Haven Girls’ Hoops Begins with Two Wins; Wrestling Bests Branford

Girls’ Basketball

The Yellowjackets’ girls’ basketball squad won both of its games in the opening week of the season to start the year 2-0.

On Dec. 13, East Haven defeated Foran 57-30 on opening night. East Haven took control of the game early by outscoring Foran 18-2 in the first quarter. Three different Yellowjackets hit double figures in the win as Kylie Schlottman led the way with 16 points, Olivia Coyle added 12 points, and Alexis Penziwater finished with 10.

The Easties followed that win by netting a 47-40 victory over Sheehan on Dec. 16. Schlottman scored a game-high 13 points, while Isabella Ragaini added 10 points for Head Coach Anthony Russell’s squad.

Wrestling

East Haven won its opening match of the season with a 42-22 victory over Branford on Dec. 14.

Winners for the Yellowjackets by pin were Antonio Lieto in the 120-pound weight class at the 1:08 mark, along with Josh Rao in 19 seconds at 195. Winners by decision were Alex Tapia (132, 16-1) Nick DeMorro (138, 12-5), Jonathan Macao (145, 13-11), Damien Benway (182, 9-4), and Justin Fonacier (220, 11-0). At 106, Telmo Romeo won by forfeit, as did Victor Garcia at 113. Joe Milano (126), Joncarlo Alberino (152), Danny Jarrin (160), Sebastian Montoya (170), and Armando Castaneda (285) also wrestled for East Haven in the match.

Girls' Ice Hockey

The Branford-East Haven-North Branford girls' ice hockey squad began its year by playing two games last week and came away with one loss and a tie. On Dec. 14, the Hornets opened the season by taking a 5-0 loss at Simsbury at the International Skating Center of Connecticut. Three days later, the Hornets hosted East Catholic-Glastonbury-South Windsor at DiLungo Rink in East Haven and the two squads skated to a 0-0 stalemate. Once again, the team's co-head coaches are Jack Norton and Lauren Wiggins.
