The Westbrook field hockey team was declared the co-champion of Class S following a 1-1 tie against Haddam-Killingworth in the Class S State Tournament final at Wethersfield High School on Nov. 19. It's the second state title in program history for the Knights with the other coming in 1975.

Brinley Anderson scored off a corner to give HK a 1-0 lead with 13:52 to play in the first half. Alexa Mulvihill tied the game for the Knights by netting a goal with just more than four minutes left in the half. The game stayed tied at 1 through the rest of regulation, as well as the two 10-minutes overtime periods, and so Westbrook and HK shared the title.

Top-seeded Westbrook, which had previously won the Shoreline Conference Tournament, finished its season with a record of 19-1-2. No. 3 seed Haddam-Killingworth went 16-3-2 and was playing in the Class S final for the second-straight year. The state final marked the third meeting between the teams this year. HK beat Westbrook 1-0 at home on Sept. 28 and the clubs played to a 0-0 tie in Westbrook on Oct. 20.

Earlier in the tourney, Westbrook took care of business in its Class S semifinal contest against No. 4 seed Granby Memorial on Nov. 16. The Knights recorded a 3-0 victory over Granby at Wethersfield High School to advance to their first state final since 1975, when Westbrook beat Canton 2-1 to take the Class M title.

In the Granby victory, Mulvihill opened the scoring for Westbrook with a goal at 17:30 mark. The Knights lined up for a penalty corner, Mulvihill took a pass, and rocketed one past Granby’s Rory Conroy to give the Knights a 1-0 lead heading into the half.

In the second half, Avery Bauman scored early for Westbrook on a great pass from Mulvihill. Zoe Ehlert then finished it off with a goal from Alex Young with seven minutes to play.

“It was an outstanding effort by the entire team,” Head Coach Janet Dickey said. “Granby stepped up the pressure in the second half, but Lauren Wright made nine saves to preserve the shutout, and [Mulvihill] had a goal line save during an insane scramble in front of our cage.”
