The Haddam-Killingworth field hockey squad shared the Class S title with Westbrook following a 1-1 tie between the clubs in the Class State Tournament final at Wethersfield High School on Nov. 19. It was the fourth state title for the No. 3 seed Cougars, who were playing in the Class S championship for the second-straight season and finished the year with a record of 16-3-2.

Brinley Anderson scored off a corner to give HK a 1-0 lead with 13:52 to play in the first half. Alexa Mulvihill tied the game for the Knights by netting a goal with just more than four minutes left in the half. The game stayed tied at 1 through the rest of regulation, as well as the two 10-minutes overtime periods, and so Westbrook and HK shared the title.

Top-seeded Westbrook, which had previously won the Shoreline Conference Tournament, finished its season with a record of 19-1-2. The state final marked the third meeting between the teams this year. HK beat Westbrook 1-0 at home on Sept. 28 and the clubs played to a 0-0 tie in Westbrook on Oct. 20.

Previously, HK blanked No. 2 Stonington 3-0 in a Class S State Tournament semifinal on Nov. 16 at East Lyme High School, sending the Cougars to their second-straight Class S final.

Elsewhere, the Cougars’ 200 medley relay of VonFeldt, Lauren D’Amico, Jordan Clemente, and Cassandra Garrelts took second place in 1:54.41 and only trailed Weston (1:45.38), which won the team championship at the meet. HK’s 400 free relay group of Garrelts, Clemente, D’Amico, and VonFeldt swam a time of 3:44.86 and was the runner-up to Weston (3:35.52). Also, D’Amico took 12th in the 200 free (2:07.78); Clemente was seventh for the 200 IM (2:18.29); Garrelts finished 10th with the 50 free (25.82) and ninth in the 100 free (57.36); D’Amico was sixth for the 500 free (5:30.79); the 200 free relay of Sarah Cook, Nora Homicki, Hannah McLeod, and Kiera Bragdon finished 10th (1:48.45); plus Neve Blanton was 22nd (1:21.33) and Nicole Kuipers swam to 23rd (1:21.42) in the 100 breaststroke.
