Guilford Edges Lauralton to Make State Final; Mayo Swims to All-State in Two Events

Field Hockey

The No. 4-seeded Indians’ field hockey squad defeated SCC rival and No. 8 seed Lauralton Hall 1-0 in the semifinals of the Class M State Tournament on Nov. 16 at Branford High School. Celia Mariconda netted the deciding goal as 19:31 remained in regulation for Guilford.

The Indians (17-3-0-1), who will play in a state final for the first time since 2012, will face No. 7 New Canaan (14-4-1) for the Class M title on Saturday, Nov. 19 at noon at Wethersfield High School.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

Freshman Alexandra Mayo represented Guilford at the Class M State Championship at Wesleyan University, scoring 53 points to put the Indians in 19th place. Mayo was the runner-up in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.55 seconds, only placing behind Katherine Begg of Lauralton Hall, who swam a 53.51. Mayo additionally took third place in the 200 freestyle at 1:58.47. She earned All-State distinction in both events and qualified for the State Open Championship in the 100 freestyle. That meet is at Yale University at noon on Saturday, Nov. 19.
