Yellowjackets’ Football Beats Guilford, 23-15

The East Haven football team improved to 3-5 overall after defeating SCC Tier 3 foe Guilford by a 23-15 final on the road on Nov. 11. The victory also put the Yellowjackets’ record at 3-2 in tier play.

The teams played a scoreless first quarter, but Guilford got on the board first as Jack Strand broke off a 37-yard touchdown run to give Guilford a 7-0 lead. East Haven answered back on its next drive when Evan Damian drilled a 24-yard field goal to cut it to 7-3. East Haven stopped Guilford on its next possession and then drove 45 yards for a score and a 10-7 lead. Dominic Manna finished the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run, which was his first of three on the night. The Easties then capitalized on a turnover by Guilford to score again before halftime. Eryk Derda fumbled deep in Indians’ territory and East Haven’s Corey Waselik recovered the ball at the 16-yard line. That set up another 1-yard touchdown run by Manna to give East Haven a 17-7 lead heading into the half.

East Haven extended its lead early in the third quarter when Manna, who finished with more than 100 rushing yards, ran for a 41-yard touchdown to make it 23-7. Guilford (3-6, 3-3) scored on its next possession to cut it 23-15, but East Haven’s defense held the Indians in check for the rest of the way.

East Haven’s next game is on the road on Thursday, Nov. 17 at Brien McMahon in Norwalk at 7 p.m. After that, the Yellowjackets have their annual rivalry game against Branford on Thanksgiving Day.

Volleyball

The East Haven volleyball team saw its season come to an end with a loss to Killingly in the opening round of the Class M State Tournament on Nov. 7. The loss put East Haven’s final record at 8-14 this season.

East Haven entered the Class M Tournament as the 28th seed and was topped by No. 5 Killingly 3-1 (25-19, 25-20, 24-26, 25-22) on the road. In the loss, Kylie Schlottman had a great night at the net for East Haven by finishing with 18 kills, while Summer Onorato added nine kills. Defensively, four different Yellowjackets finished with double-digit serve receives as Amber Ciscone led the way with 23, Schlottman had 15, Onorato finished with 14, and Megan Roberts added 11. Onorato led the team with 11 digs, while Ciscone had 10 and Schlottman added nine. Isabella Ragaini contributed 25 assists and Julia SanGiovanni had two blocks in the game for the Easties, who served up eight aces.
