It’s two down and two to go for the top-seeded Westbrook field hockey team, which defeated No. 16 seed Old Saybrook and No. 8 New Fairfield to earn a spot in the Class S State Tournament semifinals.

On Nov. 8, Westbrook played Shoreline Conference rival Old Saybrook in the first round of the Class S bracket and defeated the Rams 3-1. Avery Bauman got the Knights on the board when she scored a goal that was assisted by Alexa Mulvihill and Alex Young. The Knights’ defense was playing great and they took a 1-0 lead into halftime. In the second half, Westbrook netminder Lauren Wright, who finished with two saves, allowed a goal to Old Saybrook’s Aubrey Effinger to even the game at 1, but the Knights responded with two unanswered scores for a 3-1 victory. Biance Ferrucci scored on an assist from Zoe Ehlert and Katherine Dahl’s subsequent goal was set up by Carolyn Bauman. The Knights won the shots-on-goal battle 7-3 to move on to the quarterfinals.

In that round on Nov. 10, Westbrook defeated New Fairfield 3-2 to make its way to the semis. Westbrook once again scored the only goal of the first half as Ehlert’s shot found the back of the cage with Mulvihill and Avery Bauman getting the assists. Mulvihill pushed the lead to 2-0 early in the second half and then Ehlert netted her second of the game late in the frame for a 3-1 advantage before New Fairfield scored the final goal. Lauren Wright made three saves to earn the win in net as the Knights forced New Fairfield’s goalie Emily King to make 13 saves.

Westbrook pushed its record to 18-1-1 with the victories and will face off against No. 4 Granby in the Class S semifinals at Wethersfield High School on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 6:30 p.m. Should the Knights win that game, they’ll play the winner of No. 2 Stonington and No. 3 Haddam-Killingworth in the final on Saturday, Nov. 19 at Wethersfield.

Boys’ Soccer

No. 20 seed Westbrook was defeated by No. 13 Wamogo in the first round of the Class S State Tournament by an 8-2 score on Nov. 8. The Knights ended their season with a 5-6-6 overall record. In the loss, the two goals scored by Westbrook came from Sebastian Mejia and Jason Raunikar.
