Old Saybrook-Westbrook Football Wins Fifth Straight; Field Hockey Reaches States

The Rams’ football team made it five-straight wins with a 34-0 victory at Pequot Conference opponent Nonnewaug on Nov. 5. Old Saybrook-Westbrook improved to 6-1 this season and is in 10th place in the Class S State Playoff standings. The top eight teams qualify and right now Rocky Hill (7-1) is in the No. 8 spot with Suffield-East Windsor-Somers (7-1) at No. 9 in the rankings.

Old Saybrook-Westbrook did the majority of its damage on the ground against Nonnewaug (1-6) as the Rams finished the contest with five rushing touchdowns. In the first quarter, Victor Pascoe ran home a 5-yard score and Vincent Dyer scored on a 45-yard run. In the second quarter, Chase Cook scored on a 2-yard plunge and them Pascoe’s 6-yard touchdown rush made it 27-0 at the half. Dyer finished the scoring in the third quarter with a 38-yard run for the Rams, who have outscored the opposition 253-89 this season.

The Rams’ next game is at home against Gilbert-Northwestern at noon on Saturday, Nov. 12. Gilbert-Northwestern has a 7-1 record, is in first place in the Pequot Conference West Division, and most recently shut out Haddam-Killingworth 33-0.

Field Hockey

The Old Saybrook field hockey team defeated Waterford 3-0 in its final game of the regular season on Nov. 2 to squeeze into the Class S State Tournament with a record of 6-9-1.

It was Senior Night for Old Saybrook as the Rams honored seniors Delilah Hallowell, Erika Kidd, Aubrey Efinger, Hannah Lemire, Shadra Tiden, Rosie Rothman, and Alyssa Diaz prior to the game. The Rams carried the positive energy into the contest as Hallowell assisted Efinger on Old Saybrook’s first goal at 18:08 for a 1-0 lead. Lemire scored unassisted at 25:53 and she later assisted Molly Beck’s goal at 35:06 for the 3-0 final. Shadra Tiden made four saves to record the shutout for Old Saybrook.

In the opening round of states, the Rams will play at top-seeded Shoreline Conference champion Westbrook (16-1-1) in the first round at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 8. If Old Saybrook wins, it would play at the winner of No. 8 New Fairfield and No. 9 Thomaston in the quarterfinals on Thursday, Nov. 10.

Girls’ Soccer

The Rams are the No, 13 seed in the Class S State Tournament and will host No. 20 Litchfield in a first round contest at 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 7. With a victory, the Rams (8-3-5) would play at No. 4 St. Bernard (12-2-2) in the second round on Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 2 p.m.

Boys’ Cross Country

Shane Henderson competed in the State Open Championship at Wickham Park on Nov. 4 and raced to a 62nd-place finish. Henderson completed his run in a time of 17:12 on behalf of the Rams.

Girls’ Cross Country

Jael Givehand and Grace Hanratty both raced at the State Open Championship last week. Givehand finished the race in 50th place with a time of 20:38, while Hanratty placed 83rd at 20:58.
