Mendonca Swims to SCC Backstroke Title for Hand; Girls’ Volleyball Loses in Quarters

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

Freshman Kayla Mendonca took home the crown in the 100-yard backstroke to help the Hand girls’ swimming and diving squad finish in fourth place with 751.50 points at the SCC Championship at Southern Connecticut State University on Nov. 3. Mendonca swam a time of 57.93 seconds in the backstroke to defeat runner-up Laura Rosado of East Haven-Cross, who swam a 58.19. Mendonca also tied for second in the 200 freestyle at 1:57.02 and made All-SCC in both of her events.

Additionally, the quartet of Mendonca, Caroline Genther, Case Porter, and Allie Mascia finished third in the 200 medley relay with time of 1:52.94. Mascia was runner-up for the 50 free at 24.63 and took second in the 100 free (54.25) to earn All-Conference honors in each event. Genther came in fourth for the 500 free (5:16.75) and finished ninth in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.40). Emma Connolly came in sixth (1:00.59) and Porter tied for ninth (1:02.00) in the 100 butterfly, plus Connolly also finished 15th for the 200 individual medley with a 2:20.02. Kelly Doktorski placed eighth in the 200 free (2:00.28) and was ninth for the 100 free (55.88). The 200 freestyle relay team of Erin Reilly, Connolly, Johanna Doerr, and Doktorski was seventh (1:47.72) and the 400 free relay of Ruby Redlich, Doktorski, Mendonca, and Mascia took third (3:42.83).

Girls’ Volleyball

No. 4 seed Hand hosted No. 5 Branford in a SCC Tournament quarterfinal on Nov. 1 and took a 3-1 loss with scores of 23-25, 25-23, 19-25, 15-25. Amanda Gentile had 11 kills and 28 digs, while Kaitlyn Martin added 10 kills and 31 digs for Hand.

Next up for the 16-5 Tigers is the Class L State Tournament, which begins this week.

Football

Hand dropped to 1-7 with a 33-23 home loss to West Haven on Nov. 4.

The Blue Devils struck first on a 53-yard TD rush, but the Tigers responded and took a 10-6 lead with 7:32 to play before halftime on a 3-yard pass from Joe Ciotti to Kevin Hughes. West Haven followed by scoring three-straight touchdowns to lead 26-10 at the break.

The Blue Devils made it 33-10 on a 7-yard rush, but then the Tigers began to mount a late rally. Brett Bilcheck raced to the end zone from 54 yards out to make it 33-16 with 5:45 remaining in the third. Bilcheck later threw a 20-yard TD pass to Ken Ciotti to bring it to a 33-23 score. Unfortunately, the Tigers could get no closer in taking the defeat.

The Tigers next travel to Cheshire (5-3) on Friday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m.
