Great Night for the Indians at SCCs; Symon Qualifies for New Englands

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

The North Haven girls’ swimming and diving team put together a series of outstanding performances at the Southern Connecticut Conference Championship last week. The Indians scored 630 points to finish in fifth place out of 16 squads at Southern Connecticut State University on Nov. 3.

Freshman Angela Gambardella made All-SCC in two events by swimming a time of 1:07.12 to take second place in the 100 breaststroke, along with a lifetime-best mark of 2:12.65 for third in the 200 individual medley. Senior Lauren Spencer turned in two lifetime-best performances as she placed third in the 500 freestyle at 5:14.12 and took fifth in the 100 backstroke at 1:00.86. Spencer’s time in the 500 free earned her All-SCC distinction.

Senior Molly Duffy finished fourth in the breaststroke with a lifetime best 1:09.74 and took 22nd in the 200 free at 2:09.27, which was also a lifetime best. Fellow senior Callyn Priebe notched lifetime bests in the 200 IM (10th, 2:16.24) and the 100 free (11th, 56.78).

Junior Laura Borrelli placed fifth in the 50 free in 25.65 and was 17th for the 100 freestyle at 57.22. Junior Jasmine Nguy posted lifetime bests in the 200 free (10th, 2:01.95) and the 100 butterfly (12th, 1:02.58).

Gambardella, Priebe, Spencer, and Borrelli also joined forces to place fifth in the 400 freestyle relay with a school record time of 3:45.54. The team of Spencer, Gambardella, Nguy, and Borrelli finished fourth in the 200 medley relay at 1:53.55.

Additionally, North Haven saw some other freshmen fare well at the SCC meet. Mackenzie Montesi had lifetime-best times in the 500 free (16th, 5:41.13) and the 200 IM (26th, 2:25.31), Kiersten Winter was 21st in the breaststroke at 1:16.67 and took 22nd in the 100 fly with a lifetime best 1:07.08, and Abby Kirtland finished 32nd in the backstroke at 1:11.82. In the diving competition, freshman Ava Santacroce tallied a score of 281.15 points and finished in 12th place. Also, the Indians’ 200 freestyle relay of Priebe, Nguy, Michaela Salvo, and Montesi came in eighth place with a 1:48.66.

Next up for North Haven is states, which got started with the Class M Diving State Championship at Bulkeley on Nov. 9 (after press time). Then on Saturday, Nov. 12, the Class M Swimming Qualifying takes place at Masuk at 6 p.m. After that is the Class M Swimming State Championship at Wesleyan University on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m.

Girls’ Cross Country

Senior Elise Symon recorded a time of 19 minutes and 37 seconds to finish in 12th place out of 187 runners at the State Open Championship at Wickham Park on Nov. 4. By virtue of this performance, Symon became the first athlete in program history to qualify for the New England Championship, which is at Ponaganset High School in North Scituate, Rhode Island on Saturday, Nov. 12.

Symon’s time at the Open was 15 seconds faster than in her first-place finish at the Class MM State Championship on Oct. 29, when she ran a 19:52. The week before that, Symon earned All-SCC First Team honors for the second-straight year and made All-Conference for the third year in a row by taking fourth place in 19:54 at the SCC Championship.

Girls’ Soccer

North Haven is the No. 24 seed in the Class L State Tournament and played at No. 9 seed Woodstock (12-2-1) in the first round on Nov. 7 (after press time). If the Indians (6-9-1) won, they either played at No. 8 Hand or hosted No. 25 Rockville on Nov. 9 (after press time).

Football

The North Haven football team dropped a 42-10 home contest against Xavier on Nov. 4 and is now 3-5 on the season.

Mark Montano scored on a 2-yard touchdown rush and Colin Finkle kicked the extra point as North Haven tied the game at 7 midway through the opening quarter. Xavier scored the next two TDs and then Finkle booted a 20-yard field goal to make it 21-10 before the Falcons scored one more touchdown before halftime. Xavier (5-3) followed with two more scores in the third quarter for the 42-10 final.

Jack Steinman passed for 151 yards, while Max Sullivan rushed 11 times for 121 yards and also caught two passes for 95 yards. Devan Brockamer added 56 yards on the ground for the Indians. On defense, Sullivan and Jake Tantorski both had 10 tackles.

The Indians are playing Fairfield Prep (5-3) at Rafferty Stadium at Fairfield University at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11. After that, North Haven hosts Amity on Thanksgiving on Thursday, Nov. 24 at 10 a.m.
