HK Boys’ Soccer Advances in Shorelines; Girls’ Cross Country Takes 2nd at States

Boys’ Soccer

The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ soccer squad played Valley Regional to a 1-1 draw on Oct. 24 and then finished the regular season at 7-6-1 following a 2-1 loss to Morgan on Oct. 26. Then in the Shoreline Conference Tournament quarterfinals on Oct. 29, the Cougars hosted Cromwell and prevailed by the final score of 2-1.

HK now advances to face Old Saybrook in a semifinal on Tuesday, Nov. 1 and a win there puts the Cougars in the final against the winner of Morgan and Old Lyme on Friday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m.

Girls’ Soccer

HK tied Valley Regional 4-4 on Oct. 24. Maddie Kiely netted a hat trick for the Cougars, while Autumn Coady scored their other goal. Kiely and Coady also assisted on scores. Meghan O’Brien made nine saves as the Warriors narrowly outshot HK 15-14.

Two days later, the Cougars took a 1-0 defeat to Morgan to finish the year at 2-10-2.

Girls’ Cross Country

The Cougars scored 78 points and finished second to Immaculate (53 points) at the Class SS State Championship at Wickham Park on Oct. 29.

Kelsey D’Amico placed seventh with a time of 20:24 for HK, while Lexie Bouthillier came in eighth (20:26), Lizzie Early was 13th (20:43), Julianne Kelly placed 18th (20:49), Emma Anziano finished 32nd (21:41), Grace Lindell was 46th (22:36), and Maggie Fisher came in 50th (22:51). D’Amico and Bouthillier made All-State by virtue of finishing in the top eight.

Football

HK improved to 3-4 after its second-straight win with a 24-8 final against Coventry-Windham Tech-Bolton on Oct. 28.

Alex Segaline had three touchdown runs, two of 12 yards and another from three yards away to lead HK. Segaline added a 2-point conversion reception and also a 2-point conversion run for the Cougars, who only needed to pass the ball three times for the entire game to get the win. Jake Frith broke off several runs of 10 yards or more for HK.

On the defensive side, Frith led the team in tackles from his cornerback position.

“I thought the kids played hard tonight and it was a total team effort,” said Head Coach Mike Baklik. “I was especially pleased with our running game and our ability to control the ball for much of the game.”

The Cougars next host Nonnewaug (1-6) on Friday, Nov. 4 at 6:30 p.m.

Field Hockey

The Cougars shut out non-conference foe Canton 2-0 on Oct. 24. HK then blanked Pomperaug 1-0 on Oct. 26 to end the regular season with a mark of 13-2-1.

The Cougars next take on Valley Regional on Tuesday, Nov. 1 in a Shoreline Conference Tournament semifinal. The winner advances to the final on Thursday, Nov. 3 against either Westbrook or North Branford at Indian River Complex in Clinton at 7 p.m.

Volleyball

The Cougars took their first loss of the season by a 3-1 final to Hale-Ray on Oct. 24. They then finished the regular season at an impressive 19-1 after sweeping Bacon Academy on Oct. 26.

HK’s next match will be in the Shoreline Conference Tournament semifinals on Wednesday, Nov. 2. A win there puts the Cougars in the final on Friday, Nov. 4.
