Hand Girls’ Soccer, Volleyball Advance in SCCs

Girls’ Soccer

The Tigers’ girls’ soccer squad posted a 2-0 shutout of Mercy on Oct. 24 and then closed the regular season at 12-1-3 with a 3-0 blanking of Norwich Free Academy on Oct. 27. Hand entered the SCC Tournament as the top seed and shu tout No. 8 Mercy 2-0 on Oct. 29 in the quarterfinals.

The Tigers next host No. 5 West Haven in a semifinal on Tuesday, Nov. 1 and a win there puts Hand in the final against the winner of Amity and Cheshire on Thursday, Nov. 3 at West Haven at 5:30 p.m.

Boys’ Soccer

Hand edged out Guilford 1-0 on Oct. 24 to clinch the top seed in the SCC Tournament and finish the regular season with a record of 11-1-4. The Tigers then hosted those same Indians in the quarterfinals of the SCC Tournament on Oct. 29. Guilford, seeded 8th, took the rematch by winning on penalty kicks, 3-2, after both sides had played to a 1-1 standstill through two regulation and overtimes periods.

Girls’ Volleyball

Hand swept East Haven on Oct. 24 to finish the regular season at 15-4. Then in the first round of the SCC Tournament on Oct. 29, No. 4-seeded Hand swept No. 13 Guilford by the final of 25-21, 25-21, 25-15. Kaitlyn Martin had four kills, six aces, and 19 digs; Amanda Gentile added eight kills, three aces, and 14 digs; Chika Ogbejesi contributed 22 assists in the victory for the Tigers.

Hand now hosts No. 5 Branford in a quarterfinal on Tuesday, Nov. 1. A win there puts the Tigers in the semifinals versus the winner of Amity and Foran on Thursday, Nov. 3 and then another victory would vault Hand into the final on Saturday, Nov. 5 at East Haven at 6 p.m.

Field Hockey

The Tigers avenged an early season loss to Branford by defeating the Hornets 2-0 on Oct. 24 to finish the regular season at 8-6-2 overall with a mark of 8-3-1 in the SCC. Hand struck twice in the first half with goals from Erickson Richard (from Sophie Schreck with 18:05 left in the period) and Hollis Wivell (from Glenna-Kate Gies and Schreck at 4:48 before halftime). Kylie Gargiulo made nine saves on the night.

Later in the week, Hand lost 1-0 in double overtime to Guilford on Oct. 29 in the quarterfinals of the SCC Tournament.

Girls’ Cross Country

The Tigers finished seventh with 189 points at the Class L State Championship at Wickham Park on Oct. 29.

For Hand, Megan Phillips finished 20th (21:00), Madison Rotermund was 38th (21:43), Emily Baker placed 39th (21:44), Gabrielle Martin was 43rd (21:54), Colleen Caruth took 49th (22:05), Jade Law came in 63rd (22:27), and Emily Connelly was 79th (22:57).

Boys’ Cross Country

Hand came in 16th place with 426 points at the Class L State Championship last week.

For the Tigers, Jamie Calderon placed 72nd (18:34), Owen McGeary finished 73rd (18:35), John Lisi was 77th (18:39), Nicholas Zorba took 95th (19”06), Michael Mendonca came in 109th (19:20), Michael Campanelli was 119th (19:32), and Michael Healey finished 138th (19:58).

Football

The Tigers dropped to 1-6 after taking a 23-6 road defeat to Notre Dame-West Haven on Oct. 6. Hand’s lone score came in the third quarter on a 37-yard touchdown rush.

The Tigers next host West Haven (7-0) on Friday, Nov. 4 with kickoff slated for 7 p.m.
