Guilford Boys’ Soccer, Field Hockey Beat Hand in SCCs; Both Cross Country Teams Run Well at States

Boys’ Soccer

The Guilford boys’ soccer squad finished the regular season at 7-5-4 after taking a 1-0 loss to Hand on Oct. 24, after which the 8th-seeded Indians beat top-seeded Hand in the first round of the SCC Tournament on Oct. 29. The two teams were knotted at 1 through regulation and two overtimes and then the Indians prevailed 3-2 on penalty kicks.

Guilford advanced to face No. 4 Fairfield Prep in a semifinal on Tuesday, Nov. 1 and a win there puts the Indians in the final on Thursday, Nov. 3 at West Haven at 7:30 p.m. versus either Cheshire or defending champion Shelton.

Girls’ Soccer

Guilford concluded the regular season on Oct. 24 by playing to a 1-1 draw with Lauralton Hall to finish with a 10-4-2 mark. After that, the 6th-seeded Indians traveled to No. 3 Amity for a SCC Tournament quarterfinal on Oct. 29 and lost 1-0 after the Spartans won the deciding penalty kick session, 3-1.

Field Hockey

The Indians routed Shelton by a 12-0 final on Oct. 24 and blanked Sheehan 5-0 on Oct. 27 to close the regular season with a record of 13-2-0-1. Guilford then defeated Hand 1-0 in double overtime in the quarterfinals of the SCC Tournament on Oct. 29.

Through regulation and the first overtime, the score remained tied at 0-0 in the Indians’ SCC opener. Then in the second overtime, Julia Ellman centered the ball from the right of the circle to Olivia Clarke, who reverse chipped the ball past the Hand goalie for the win.

The Indians now travel to Cheshire for a semifinal on Tuesday, Nov. 1. The winner advances to the final on Thursday, Nov. 3 at Lyman Hall versus either Branford or Lauralton Hall.

Boys’ Cross Country

Guilford tallied 106 points to finish second to champion Barlow (88 points) at the Class MM State Championship at Wickham Park on Oct. 29.

For the Indians at the meet, Finn Davidson placed fifth with a time of 17:17, Joshua Stern was seventh (17:24), Elijah Dillon finished 30th (18:14), Natahn Van Zandt was 31st (18:14), Rafael Siciliano came in 33rd (18:16), Will Smith was 39th (18:23), and Will Dinauer finished 46th (18:41). Davidson and Stern Made All-State by virtue of finishing in the top eight.

Girls’ Cross Country

The Indians scored 109 points to finish third at the Class MM State Championship last week.

Guilford’s Meredith Bloss ran a time of 19:55 and was the runner-up to North Haven’s Elise Symon (19:52) at the meet. Also for the Indians, Clara Wiesler finished fifth (20:34), Tessa Fridell was 21st (21:47), Eleanor Wiesler was 34th (22:19), Jess Bohan paced 47th (22:42), and Emma Bonz finished 50th (22:51). Bloss and Clara Wiesler made the All-State Team by finishing in the top eight.

Volleyball

Guilford took a 3-0 loss to Shelton (25-20, 25-16, 25-16) on Oct. 24. Cia Mirrione led in kills with five, Amanda King added six digs, and Caroline Wienkamp handed out eight assists.

The Indians then took a 3-0 loss East Lyme on Oct. 28 to end the regular season at 10-9.

The next day, the 13th-seeded Indians lost 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-15) to No. 4 Hand in the first round of the SCC Tournament. Mirrione had a dozen kills, King notched seven kills and a dozen digs, and Trinity Flynn added seven kills.
