The Yellowjackets’ football team took a 30-24 defeat at home against Hamden on Oct. 21. This was a much-anticipated matchup after the game these two schools delivered a year ago, when East Haven won in four overtimes in one of the longest games in Connecticut high school football history. The two teams played a tight game once again, but East Haven’s comeback effort fell just shy as the team dropped to 2-3 on the season.

Evan Damian started the scoring for the Easties as he hammered home a 37-yard field goal attempt. Hamden then scored 30 points in the second quarter to East Haven’s 14 to go into the break with a 30-17 lead. East Haven’s final score came in the fourth quarter.

Nate Lastomirsky went 6-of-9 for 78 yards through the air for the Yellowjackets. McClay Marshall completed his only pass for 43 yards and also ran for a team-best 133 yards with a score. Jay Donaldson rushed for 121 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

The Easties’ defense was all over Hamden’s quarterback with seven sacks. Andrew Luzzi, who had a team-high 12 tackles, finished with a pair of sacks, as did Tim Seksinski. Jose Campos, Corey Waselik, and Niam Coward all recorded a sack apiece.

East Haven lost 5-0 to Cheshire on Oct. 19 before losing 4-1 to Notre Dame-West Haven on Oct. 22 in its final home game of the season. In that contest, Doug Comesanas made nine saves in goal and Kevin Medina found the back of the net with an assist from Lucero.

On Oct. 18, West Haven topped East Haven 97-74 as the Yellowjackets won a pair of relays and two individual events. In the 200 medley relay, Ellyn DiVerniero, Syreena Melendez, Gina DiVerniero, and Laura Rosado won with a time of 2:16.31, plus the 400 freestyle relay team of Gina DiVerniero, Jennyfer Jarrin, Melendez, and Rosado won at 4:22.21.
