Rams Run Well at Shorelines; Football Wins Big Again

Boys’ Cross Country

The Rams’ boys’ cross country squad took part in the Shoreline Conference Championship at Totoket Park in North Branford on Oct. 20 and finished in second place out of 12 teams with a score of 65.

Racers for Old Saybrook included Shane Henderson, who took fourth place with a time of 17:16.7, as well as Dan Baldi (8th, 18:03.3); Eric Sultini (12th, 18:15.6); Lance Sigersmith (18th, 18:39.9); Ian Mason (23rd, 19:04.2); Josh Chang (35th, 19:45.6); and Liam Sweeney (61st, 20:59.1). Henderson and Baldi earned All-Shoreline Conference First Team accolades for the Rams, while Sultini and Sigersmith were Second Team selections.

Girls’ Cross Country

Old Saybrook competed in the Shoreline Conference Championship meet in North Branford last week and placed third out of 10 schools with a score of 71 points.

Competitors for the Rams included Jael Givehand, who came in fourth place at 20:29.7, along with Grace Hanratty (10th, 20:55.3); Tehra Givehand (15th, 21:03.5); Aliana Castro (19th, 21:22); Tyra Finkelday (27th, 22:29.9); Julia Sultini (33rd, 22:58.8); and Ingrid Boland (45th, 24:18). Jael Givehand and Hanratty were All-Shoreline Conference First Team honorees, plus Tehra Givehand and Castro made the Second Team.

Football

Old Saybrook-Westbrook scored in every quarter as it defeated Coventry-Windham Tech-Bolton by a 33-12 score on Oct. 21 to improve to 4-1 this season. Chase Cook, Victor Pascoe, and Vincent Dyer did most of the Rams’ offensive damage in the win.

In the first quarter, Cook scored on a 34-yard run that put the Rams up 7-6. In the second, Dyer’s 3-yard plunge gave the Rams a 13-6 lead heading into the half. In the third quarter, Pascoe found the end zone twice to give Old Saybrook-Westbrook a commanding 26-6 advantage. He first scored on a 65-yard pass from Dyer and then ran home a 30-yard score. Cook capped the scoring in the fourth quarter with a 4-yard scamper.

The Rams’ next contest is a home game against Windsor Locks-Suffield-East Granby (0-5) at noon on Saturday, Oct. 29.

Boys’ Soccer

Old Saybrook remained undefeated through 15 games with a trio of wins last week to improve to 13-0-2 this year.

On Oct. 17, the Rams started the week with a 3-2 victory over East Hampton where Justin Phillips netted two goals and Ashton Reina added one. Goalie Jonah Nucci made three save in the win.

Old Saybrook wrapped up the week with a 4-1 win at Old Lyme on Oct. 20 and a 3-1 victory over East Lyme on Oct. 22. Against Old Lyme, in the “Battle of the Baldwin Bridge,” Reina scored twice and Paddy Ryan and Aidan Reid added a goal each for the Rams. Nucci made nine saves to earn the win in net.

Old Saybrook then played East Lyme for the first time in several decades and Austin Hilger, Reina, and Sebby Gallitto all delivering goals. Nucci made four saves to keep the Rams unbeaten.

Girls’ Soccer

The Rams defeated East Hampton 2-1 at home on Oct. 17. The win was the fourth-straight victory for Old Saybrook, which improved to 8-2-4 for the year.

Field Hockey

The Rams split their games last week to move to 3-10-1 on the season.

On Oct. 17, North Branford topped Old Saybrook 3-2. The Rams opened the scoring with a pair of quick goals by Mandy Beck and Hannah Lemire, but couldn’t hold the lead as North Branford scored three times in the second half. Goalie Shadra Tiden had nine saves for the Rams.

Old Saybrook rebounded with a 3-1 win over East Lyme at home, where it will play its final three games of the season.
