Historic Week for Westbrook Field Hockey; Boys’ Soccer Edges Coginchaug

Field Hockey

It was a historic week for the Knights’ field hockey team as Head Coach Janet Dickey earned career win No. 200, while Alexa Mulvihill broke the program’s all-time scoring record. On top of that, Westbrook is on the verge of obtaining the top seed in the upcoming State Tournament and goalie Lauren Wright is closing in on the school record for shutouts in a season.

On Oct. 17, Westbrook defeated Granby 1-0 to give Coach Dickey her 200th career victory at the helm of the field hockey program. Mulvihill scored unassisted in the first half and Wright made eight saves to preserve the win against the perennial state powerhouse.

The following day, the Knights topped Morgan 6-0 in a game that saw Mulvihill score three times to break Westbrook’s single-season scoring record, which was 17. Mulvihill also had an assist in the game, giving her 20 goals and 10 assists on the season. Biance Ferrucci and Avery Bauman added a goal and assist apiece, Zoe Ehlert had a goal and three assists, and Carolyn Bauman finished with one assist.

On Oct. 20, Westbrook and Haddam-Killingworth played to a 0-0 tie. Wright made eight saves for the shutout as Westbrook moved to 12-1-1.

Boys’ Soccer

Westbrook split its two games last week to stand at 3-5-6 for the season. The Knights need a win or a tie in their last two regular season games to make states.

On Oct. 17, Morgan topped the Knights 3-0 as Jake Marciniec made 10 saves.

On Oct. 20, Westbrook rebounded with a 3-2 victory over Coginchaug. Sebastian Mejia scored twice, Hayden Richardson assisted both goals, and Jack Hayes added Westbrook’s final tally. Yeison Gomez had the assist for Hayes as Marciniec made nine saves in the win.

Girls’ Soccer

The Knights lost to Morgan and Coginchaug last week, dropping their overall record to 4-9-1 for the season.

On Oct. 17, Westbrook lost 3-1 against Morgan as Gabby Ehlert scored the team’s lone goal with Erin Metcalfe getting the assist. Alexi Vumback made 10 saves in the loss.

On Oct. 17, Coginchaug topped the Knights 2-0 as Marilyn Ulanowicz made two saves in goal.
