Hand Girls’ Volleyball, Soccer Take Division Crowns; Football Loses to Xavier in OT

Girls’ Volleyball

The Hand girls’ volleyball team won all three of its matches by way of the sweep last week. With the victories, the Tigers improved to 14-4 overall and also clinched the SCC Oronoque championship with a record of 7-1 in the division.

To start the week, Hand defeated West Haven 25-14, 25-15, 25-12. Halle Freund had six kills, plus Amanda Gentile added seven kills and three blocks to lead Hand.

The Tigers then swept Hillhouse two days later, followed by a sweep of divisional foe Career on Oct. 21 to put a bow on the Oronoque crown.

Girls’ Soccer

The Hand girls’ soccer team shut out Sacred Heart Academy 3-0 on Oct. 17 and then stretched its record to 10-1-3 after a 2-1 win over Lauralton Hall on Oct. 21. The Tigers also won the SCC Quinnipiac Division title by finishing with a divisional mark of 5-0-1 this season.

Boys’ Soccer

Hand moved to 10-1-4 following a 4-1 win over Sheehan on Oct. 17, a big 3-1 win over Fairfield Prep on Oct. 19, and a 1-0 shutout of Branford on Oct. 22.

Facing Sheehan, Drew Montgomery off an assist by Owen McShane at 23:32 and McShane then netted an unassisted corner kick 13 seconds before the half. Lee Wilderman scored in the second half at the 31-minute mark and Liam Akers grabbed the fourth goal on an assist by Brendan Wray at 28:22. Hand had nine shots on goal to Sheehan’s three.

Versus Prep, Wilderman scored twice and Montgomery completed the first-half trifecta of tallies. Akers assisted twice, plus Brendan Wray had a helper. The Tigers outshot the Jesuits 9-2 and handed them their first loss against an in-state opponent this year.

On Senior Night versus Branford, a first-half goal by Jackson Guay that was assisted by McShane was all the Tigers would need to get the 1-0 win.

Football

Hand dropped to 1-5 after taking a 20-13 overtime loss to Xavier on Oct. 21.

The host Falcons struck first with a 54-yard touchdown connection as 42 seconds remained in the first quarter. Xavier made it 13-0 on a 29-yard TD toss with 9:29 left in the third. Hand responded on a Nick Leone 2-yard TD run with 11:29 remaining in regulation to make it 13-7. The Tigers then knotted things up at 13 just under four minutes later on a Leone 35-yard dash to the house.

In the extra session, the Falcons scored first on a 1-yard rush to go up 20-13. The Tigers had one last gasp on 4th-and-goal at the Xavier 2-yard line, but they were stopped short.

Hand next travels to Veteran’s Stadium on Friday, Oct. 28 to battle Notre Dame-West Haven (3-3) at 7 p.m.

Girls’ Cross Country

Hand finished fifth place with 144 points at the SCC Championship on Oct. 20 at East Shore Park in New Haven. Gabrielle Martin placed 26th (21:39) for the Tigers. Jade Law followed in 27th (21:42), Emily Baker was 28th (21:42), Colleen Caruth finished 31st (21:56), Megan Phillips finished 32nd (21:58), Madison Rotermund was 35th (22:09), and Victoria Hartmann raced to 48th (22:33).

Boys’ Cross Country

The Tigers were 13th with 352 points for the SCC Championship on Oct. 20 at East Shore Park in New Haven. Jamie Calderon finished in 56th place for (18:16) for Hand, while John Lisi was 62nd (18:26), Owen McGeary raced to 66th (18:31), Michael Mendonca was 78th (18:53), Michael Healey came in 90th (19:10), Michael Campanelli was 97th (19:20), and Michael Rossi crossed the finish line in 109th (19:47).

Field Hockey

Hand blanked Lyman Hall 5-0 on Oct. 17, scored another rout by a 6-0 final over Mercy two days later, and lost to Guilford 3-0 on Oct. 22. The Tigers are now 7-6-2.

Against Mercy, goals came from Erickson Richard (2), Jacqui Sandor, Hollis Wivell, Sophie Schreck, and Taylor Leckey. Assisting were Nora McCarthy (2), Sandor, Glenna-Kate Gies, Leckey, and Schreck. Kylie Gargiulo and Abby Meehan each made four stops apiece.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

The Tigers took a 99-83 loss to Amity on Oct. 17 to close the regular season at 7-4. Event wins came in the 200 medley relay with Kayla Mendonca, Caroline Genther, Case Porter, and Allie Masica (1:59.30); Mascia in the 50 free (25.62); Noelle Bergere in the diving (222.52); Mascia in the 100 free (57.17); Genther in the 500 free (5:28.37); Mendonca for the 100 backstroke (1:01.94); and the 400 free relay of Emma Connolly, Kelly Doktorski, Mascia, and Mendonca (3:53.34).

Additionally, in the 200 free, Kylie Scarpellino took third (2:16.27); for the 100 butterfly, Mendonca took second (1:02.06) and Connolly was third (1:04.18); Doktorski came in second (58.15) for the 50 free; the 200 free relay team of Erin Reilly, Gabriella Wira, Porter and Johanna Doerr took third (1:56.71); Genther took third in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.17); and team of Redlich, Wira, Connolly, and Doktorski placed third (2:05.41) for the 200 medley relay.
