Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country

On Oct. 13, Haddam-Killingworth’s country teams traveled to Totoket Park in North Branford to compete in their final regular season meet, the Shoreline Conference Mega Meet. Both teams competed in the seeded races against Old Saybrook, Coginchaug, East Hampton, Valley Regional, and Old Lyme, and they each went undefeated on the afternoon to finish with dual-meet marks of 15-0. This is the third year in a row that the HK boys have posted an unblemished regular season record, while the girls did so for the second-straight year.

The Cougars’ boys defeated Old Saybrook by a score of 22-38, in addition to posting victories versus Old Lyme (15-47), East Hampton (15-50), Valley (15-50), and Coginchaug (25-35). Finishing together in fourth through sixth place with the same time of 17:36 for the 3.1-mile course were juniors Andrew Meredith, Daniel Schumann, and Jonah Spector. Junior Conor McCabe ran a terrific race to finish eighth in 18:11, while senior tri-captain Noah Miller placed ninth at 18:16.

Meanwhile, the HK girls’ team defeated Old Saybrook (26-30), Cromwell (16-46), East Hampton (16-46), Old Lyme (21-34), and Coginchaug (23-34). The Cougars were led by the duo of juniors Kelsey D’Amico and Lexie Bouthillier, who placed second and third, respectively, in a time of 21:01 for the 3.1-mile course. Following close behind was senior tri-captain Lizzie Early in seventh (21:28), junior Julie Kelly at 12th (21:46), plus sophomore Emma Anziano, who ran her best race of the season to place 18th (22:16).

The teams will next be in action on Thursday, Oct. 20 at the Shoreline Championship meet at Totoket Park in North Branford.

Volleyball

Haddam-Killingworth improved its record to 15-0 this year by sweeping Old Lyme on Oct. 11, defeating Coginchaug 3-1 on Oct. 13, and then posting a 3-0 sweep of North Branford the following day.

Field Hockey

The Cougars improved to 10-2 with a 4-0 shutout of Suffield on Oct. 11 and a 4-0 victory over Morgan on Oct. 13.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

HK had a meet against Middletown last week and the Cougars emerged victorious by the score of 88-82 on Oct. 11.

Girls’ Soccer

HK took a 2-1 loss to East Hampton on Oct. 11. Maddie Kiely scored the lone Cougars’ goal at the 67:17 mark, while Meghan O’Brien made five saves.

The Cougars later lost 5-0 to Old Lyme on Oct. 13 to move to 2-8 on the season.

Boys’ Soccer

The Cougars dropped a 2-0 contest to East Hampton on Oct. 11 and then lost to Old Lyme 3-1 on Oct. 14. HK is now 5-5 this year.

Football

HK football took a 54-21 loss to SMSA-University-Classical (2-3) last week to drop to 1-4. Alex Segaline rushed for 99 yards on 14 carries for the Cougars.

SMSA scored the game’s first three touchdowns in the first quarter and never looked back. HK could only get as close as 32-14 when Segaline scored on a 6-yard run right before the half.

“Our guys got outworked by an enthusiastic team that showed a lot of desire. We were down a few players due mostly to injury, so we have our work cut out for us moving forward,” said Head Coach Mike Baklik. “I was proud to see the guys play to the very end of the game when we sustained a long final drive that ended with us scoring on the game’s last play.”

The Cougars next take on Windsor Locks-Suffield-East Granby (0-4) at Windsor Locks on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m.
