Rams’ Soccer Squads Continue Their Excellence

Boys’ Soccer

The Old Saybrook boys’ soccer team maintained its status as the top team in Class S by recording two more wins last week to remain unbeaten this season. Following victories versus Morgan and Westbrook, Old Saybrook improved to 10-0-2 overall for the season.

On Oct. 10, the Rams defeated rival Morgan 3-0 as goals were scored by Anthony Karg, Aiden Reid, and Justin Phillips. Ashton Reina assisted Karg’s goal in the first half and Karg assisted Phillips in the second. Goalie Jonah Nucci made seven saves in the victory.

On Oct. 13, Old Saybrook defeated Westbrook 5-0. Reina found the back of the net twice, while Austin Hilger, Sebby Gallitto, and Xavier Rios also scored. Phillips had an assist on Reina’s first goal and Hilger finished with a pair of assists as he found Gallitto and Rios for their goals that were a minute apart in the second half. Nucci made three saves to earn the shutout.

Girls’ Soccer

The Rams won all three of their games last week to improve to 7-2-4 and secure their spot in the Class S State Tournament.

On Oct. 10, Old Saybrook defeated Morgan 2-1 as Allison Bruehwiler scored twice and Kelsey True made four saves in goal.

On Oct. 13, the Rams edged Westbrook 4-3. After falling behind early 2-0 and going into the half down 3-2, Old Saybrook battled back to earn the victory and improve to 5-1-4 this season in conference play. Goal scorers for the Rams were India Rose Morin, Maggie Smith, Kendall Hartt, and Bruehwiler. True made four saves to preserve the win.

Old Saybrook capped the week with a 4-0 win against Lyman Memorial at home on Oct. 15.

Girls’ Cross Country

Old Saybrook took part in the Shoreline Mega Meet on Oct. 13 and came away with a 4-1 record by notching wins over East Hampton, Old Lyme, Cromwell, and Coginchaug, while taking a defeat to Haddam-Killingworth.

Top racers for Old Saybrook were, Jael Givehand who took first at 20:43; Grace Hanratty, who finished sixth at 21:21; and Tehra Givehand, who placed ninth at 21:38.

Boys’ Cross Country

The Rams competed in the Shoreline Mega Meet on Oct. 13 and raced to a 3-2 record as they defeated East Hampton, Old Lyme, and Valley Regional and lost against Coginchaug and Haddam-Killingworth.

Shane Henderson finished in first place for Old Saybrook with a time of 16:53. Dan Baldi took seventh place overall at 18:07.

Football

Old Saybrook-Westbrook visited Coginchaug on Oct. 15 and came home with a lopsided victory, 48-16, in Pequot Conference action. The win moved the Rams to 3-1 and they’ve scored more than 39 points in each of their wins.

The Rams’ next game is against Coventry-Windham Tech-Bolton (3-2) in Coventry at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21.

Field Hockey

The Rams went 1-1-1 in their three games last week to put their record at 2-9-1 for the year. All three of its games were on the road, but Old Saybrook won the first one, 6-3, at Waterford on Oct. 11. The very next day, Old Saybrook was defeated by Suffield 1-0. On Oct. 14, the Rams tied Valley Regional 2-2.

Against Valley, Chloe Root and Erika Kidd scored goals for Old Saybrook, while Claudia Winaski finished with an assist. Shandra Tiden made 12 saves in goal.
