Field Hockey

The Westbrook field hockey defeated Canton 2-0 on Oct. 3 to officially clinch its spot in the State Tournament. Alexa Mulvihill scored both goals on assists from Avery Bauman and Zoe Ehlert, while Lauren Wright recorded one save for the shutout. The Knights started the game a little sluggish, according to Head Coach Janet Dickey, but found their groove and went on to get the win.

On Oct. 5, Westbrook defeated Old Saybrook 4-0 to improve to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in Shoreline Conference action. Mulvihill recorded a hat trick and had an assist, plus Biance Ferrucci scored the team’s fourth goal. Ehlert and Katherine Dahl each had an assist and Wright made two saves for her third shutout of the season.

“Alexa did a great job of finishing in the circle in this game despite Old Saybrook’s effort to keep her off the ball. They did a good job of staying on her, but Alexa’s team found a way to get her the ball in the circle,” Dickey said. “Alexa is on track to break the school single-season scoring record without offsides set by Jill Moler in 2000. The overall scoring record set in 1976, when there was offsides, is 17, set by Laura Neri Welch.”

Boys’ Soccer

The Knights tied one and lost one last week to move its record to 2-3-5 for the season.

Westbrook started the week with a 1-1 tie with North Branford. Sebastian Mejia scored on an assist from Jack Hayes for the Knights’ goal. Jake Marciniec and Joe Pesantez combined to make 10 saves in net.

Then on Oct. 6, Haddam-Killingworth was victorious over Westbrook by a 3-0 score.

Girls’ Soccer

Westbrook went 1-1-1 in its three games last week to stand at 3-7-1 this season.

The week started on Oct. 3 with a 1-1 tie against Metropolitan Learning Center. Gabby Ehlert scored Westbrook’s goal on a penalty kick, while Knights’ keeper Lexi Vumback made three saves.

On Oct. 5, the Knights topped Med Ed Prep by a 6-1 score. Six different players scored in the game to showcase a balanced offensive attack. The goals were popped home by Ehlert, Christina Matute-Heredia, Hayden Davis, Juliana Fabrizi, Alyssa Esposito, and Gretchen Pierpont. Erin Metcalfe assisted on three of the goals and Esposito and Peirpont had one helper each. Vumback made eight saves in net to preserve the win.

To finish the week, Haddam-Killingworth defeated Westbrook 2-0 on Oct. 7. The Knights held HK to one goal until the last 40 seconds of the game.

“I was so proud of how the girls played against HK,” Head Coach Rob McConville said. “We had the better of play for the majority of the second half. The girls gave everything they had and, as a coach, that is all you can ask for. They played great and we have made major strides as a program this year so far.”
