Boys’ Soccer

The Old Saybrook boys’ soccer remained unbeaten and clinched a spot in the Class S State Tournament last week. The Rams currently boast a record of 8-0-2 for the campaign.

On Oct. 5, the Rams topped Norwich Free Academy 5-1 behind a pair of goals from Justin Phillips, as well as a goal each from Ashton Reina, Mac Coppes, and Aiden Reid. Austin Hilger, Austin Reynolds, Reina, and Phillips all had one assist apiece, while Jonah Nucci recorded five saves in goal. The two teams traded goals early, but the Rams reached deep into their pockets to put home four unanswered scores for the win.

On Oct. 6, Old Saybrook defeated Coginchaug 5-1. It was Old Saybrook’s second game in less than 24 hours, but Reina and Hilger worked together for a pair of goals before the end of the first half. In the second half, Anthony Karg converted a goal and also had two assists as Reina and Sebby Gallitto finished off the scoring. Nucci made three saves to get the win in goal.

On Oct. 8, the Rams recognized Head Coach Sam Barnes for achieving his 200th win the previous week before the team stepped on the field for the third time in four days with a game against Bacon Academy. The two teams played to a 1-1 tie as Reid’s cross was buried by Karg late in the first half, after which Bacon Academy found the back of the net on a penalty kick with 36 seconds left in the game. Nucci was busy in goal, making 10 saves to preserve the tie.

Girls’ Soccer

The Rams played to 2-2 ties in both of their matchups last week as Old Saybrook’s record is now 4-3-4.

The Rams tied Old Lyme on Oct. 3 and then played to a 2-all stalemate against Coginchaug on Oct. 6. Alison Bruewiler scored both goals for Old Saybrook in the game against Coginchaug.

Field Hockey

Old Saybrook was shut out in both of its home games last week to drop to 1-8 this season. The Rams were defeated by Westbrook, 4-0, on Oct. 5 and then lost to Haddam-Killingworth, 6-0, on Oct. 7.
