North Haven U-18 Fall Ball Squad Simply Refuses to Lose at 13-0

U-18 Fall Baseball

The North Haven U-18 fall baseball squad won five more games in recent action to improve its record to 13-0 for the season. North Haven defeated Cheshire 3-2 on Oct. 1 and rallied for a 7-6 walk-off victory over Meriden the next day. Last weekend, North Haven beat Middletown 10-4 and earned a pair of 4-1 wins versus the Connecticut Bombers.

North Haven plated two runs in the fourth inning against Cheshire before Cheshire tied the game with two runs in the fifth. North Haven later pushed home the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning and held on for the 3-2 win. Tom Myjak singled and scored on Jake Bencivengo’s two-out double for the winning run. Mark Tantorski started and allowed one earned run in five innings. Griffin Bottomley was the winning pitcher with two shutout innings. Myjak went 2-for-2 with a walk and scored two runs, while Bencivengo was 2-for-3 and had two RBI.

Hosting Meriden, North Haven left the opposition on the field by scoring three times in the seventh for a 7-6 win. North Haven trailed 6-2 before scoring twice in the sixth cut it to 6-4. Then in the seventh, Brendan Clark and Kevin Lucey singled to start the rally, after which Myjak singled in Clark to make it 6-5. Zack Pincince’s sacrifice fly scored Lucey to tie the game. With two out, Andrew Laudano singled to drive in Myjak for the walk-off win.

Myjak went 3-for-3 with a triple, three RBI, and a run scored. Leadoff hitter Peyton Farina was 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, a run, and a RBI; Clark went 2-for-4, scored a run, and had a RBI; Bottomley went 2-for-3 and drove home a run, and Laudano was 2-for-3 with a walk and a pair of RBI. Trevor MacDonnell pitched the first six innings, after which Preston Young worked a scoreless seventh to pick up the win.

In the Middletown victory, North Haven trailed 3-0 after the top of the first, but scored two in the bottom half and took the lead with three in the third en route to a 10-4 win. Lucey had a big day by going 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI. Farina drew three walks, scored twice, and knocked in a run; Laudano was 2-for-3 with a run and a RBI, and Nick Perrillie went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI. Alec Butler pitched the first three innings, after which Tantorski worked a scoreless fourth the get the win. Bottomley, Myjak, and Clark each followed with an inning to close it out.

In the first game versus the Bombers, the game was tied 1-1 before North Haven struck for a three-spot in the sixth. Tantorski allowed just one hit and an unearned run in five innings before Chris Stevens pitches a scoreless sixth for the win. Bottomley worked a clean seventh and picked up the save. Clark went 3-for-3 and scored two runs, plus Stevens was 2-for-3 with a run, a RBI, and two stolen bases.

For the second game, Young was the winning pitcher by giving up a run in five innings. Bottomley pitched the sixth and Myjak slammed the door with a scoreless seventh for the save. Myjak also went 3-for-3 and scored a run. Stevens doubled, scored a run, drove in a run, and swiped a base; Clark singled twice and walked; while Farina singled, scored a run, and added a RBI.

U-16 Fall Baseball

North Haven’s U-16 fall baseball team dropped a pair of recent decisions, but came back to claim two victories last weekend. North Haven took 2-1 loss to Hamden on Oct. 1 that was followed by a 12-7, extra-inning defeat at home against the Shoreline Hammerheads. More recently, North Haven took two from the Shoreline Hammerheads Red with final scores of 12-6 and 2-1.

Nate Zalegowski took a tough loss the Hamden contest by pitching complete game five-hitter in which he allowed just two unearned runs. Zalegowski also singled home Danny Cannavaciolo with North Haven’s lone run.

In its next game, North Haven led 5-3 before the Hammerheads scored four runs in the fourth to take a 7-5 lead. North Haven came back to tie it with a run in the fifth and another in the seventh, but Shoreline scored five times in the eighth to claim the victory. Nathan Friess pitched the first three innings for North Haven. Jayden Flores allowed four unearned runs in 1.2 innings and Nick Rossi gave up five unearned runs in 3.2 innings. Zack Pincince went 3-for-3 with a double, a triple, two runs scored, and three RBI. Leo Konopka was 2-for-4 with a run and a RBI, Colby Cusano went 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored, and RBI; Jack Peruso tripled and had two RBI, and Cannavaciolo singled, walked, and scored two runs.

Facing the Hammerheads Red, North Haven erased a 3-0 deficit by plating six runs in the third inning on its way to the 12-6 win. Friess went 4-for-5 and scored two runs, Rossi was 4-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and three RBI; Cusano homered, walked twice, scored a run, and had four RBI; and Cannvaciolo had a single and scored three times. Flores was the winning pitcher by giving up five unearned runs in 4.1 innings. Konopka closed it out by giving up an unearned run in 2.2 innings.

North Haven came back to take the nightcap with the Hammerheads, 2-1. North Haven snapped a 1-all tie by scoring a run in the sixth inning. Friess started on the mound and pitched four innings, allowing only one unearned run. Zalegowski was the winning pitcher as he hurled three scoreless innings. Peruso had a single and both RBI for North Haven. Zalegowski hit two singles, while Konopka had a single, a triple, and scored a run. Cusano singled and scored North Haven’s other run.
