East Haven Volleyball Beats Branford in Five

Volleyball

The Yellowjackets’ volleyball team won one of its two matches last week to move its overall record to 5-7 for the year.

Last week started with a 3-0 (25-19, 27-25, 25-12) loss to Lauralton Hall on Oct. 3. Kylie Schlottman finished the match with seven kills and eight digs, while Summer Onorato had a team-best 10 digs. Amber Ciscone posted a team-high 20 serve receives and Isabella Ragaini had 13 assists.

On Oct. 5, East Haven topped Branford 3-2 (25-19, 25-18, 19-25, 19-25, 18-16). Schlottman notched 22 kills and five aces for East Haven, which finished with 80 digs as a team. Ciscone led the way in that department with 24 and Onorato wasn’t far behind with 23. Ragaini had 32 assists, plus Diana Kalman finished with seven kills and five blocks.

For the second time this season, East Haven lost to divisional opponent Shelton. On Oct. 7, the Yellowjackets took a 3-1 (23-25, 25-13, 25-19, 25-21) defeat to the Gaels. The loss dropped East Haven’s record in SCC Housatonic play to 2-3 for the year. Ciscone had 18 digs and two aces, Samantha Miranda finished with four aces and four digs, and Schlottman scored 15 digs, eight digs, and four aces.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

East Haven lost a pair of matches last week, but kept both of them close.

On Oct. 5, Mercy topped the Easties 83-67. East Haven saw solid performances out of plenty of swimmers at the meet. In the 200 medley relay, Gina DiVerniero, Syreena Melendez, Ellyn DiVerniero, and Laura Rosado won with a time of 2:16.70, while the 400 freestyle relay featuring the same swimmers won at 4:24.83. In individual events, Laura Rosado won the 200 individual medley at 2:22.43 and the 500 freestyle at 5:29.55, Ellyn DiVerniero was victorious in the 100 backstroke at 1:23.68 ,and Melendez took first in the 100 breaststroke at 1:22.11.

East Haven was then defeated by Law, 98-67, on Oct. 7. Rosado won both the 200 IM at 2:19.31 and the 500 free at 5:25.96, Melendez won the 100 breaststroke at 1:26.33, and Jennyfer Jarrin took first in the 100 backstroke at 1:23.08. The 400 freestyle relay team of Gina DiVerniero, Ellyn DiVerniero, Melendez, and Rosado won at 4:30.62.

Girls’ Soccer

The Yellowjackets lost a pair of road contests last week and are now 0-8-2 for the season.

On Oct. 4, the Easties were defeated 4-1 by Cheshire. Haley Montesanto scored the lone goal for the Yellowjackets, who allowed Cheshire to take 19 shots at the East Haven goal.

On Oct. 7, Hamden got the better of East Haven by a 2-0 count. The shots on goal were pretty much even, but Hamden got two past East Haven goalie Gianna Sullo to clinch the win.

Boys’ Soccer

East Haven was shut out in both its games last week and has its overall record currently at 1-8-1.

On Oct. 3, Branford topped the Yellowjackets by a score of 5-0.

Then on Oct. 7 Career-Hillhouse defeated the Easties 8-0. Doug Comesanas made four saves in goal in the loss.
