Football

The Haddam-Killingworth football team bested Pequot Conference foe Coginchaug 33-22 for its first win of the season last week. The Cougars improved to 1-3 with the victory.

HK scored the game’s final four touchdowns after falling behind 22-7 in the third quarter. Noah Vinci scored TDs on runs of 2 yards and 15 yards and he also caught a 16-yard touchdown pass for the Cougars, who committed just one turnover on offense. Vinci’s TD catch on 4th down early in the final quarter enabled the Cougars to take a 27-22 lead. From that point on, HK controlled the ball on offense and put the game away with a 15-yard rushing score by Vinci with just under three minutes remaining. Sophomore fullback/linebacker Tobey Callender snagged a late interception that sealed the win for the Cougars. Additionally, Tyler Rettberg scored on a 25-yard TD reception late in the third quarter.

“We protected the ball and we dealt effectively with adversity--two things we’ve had trouble doing until tonight,” said Head Coach Mike Baklik. “I told the boys I was proud of the way they came back from being down two touchdowns in the third quarter. This is the kind of win we can build on.”

The Cougars next travel to Hartford’s Dillon Stadium to take on SMSA-Classical-University (1-3) at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 13.

Field Hockey

The Cougars’ field hockey team improved to 7-1 by netting a pair of wins last week.

On Sept. 26, Haddam-Killingworth posted a 5-4 overtime victory versus Canton. Bella Cosenza scored the winning goal just 53 seconds into the extra session for her second goal on the afternoon with Hannah Theriault assisting. Also scoring for HK were Brinley Anderson with two goals and Celia Payfa, who had one. Abbie Bagnoli made 11 saves to aid the Cougars.

HK then edged out rival Westbrook 1-0 on Sept. 28 with Brinley Anderson scoring the decisive goal with 18:19 left in regulation on Molly Anderson’s assist. Bagnoli made a pair of stops in the win.

Volleyball

HK now stands at 10-0 after defeating East Hampton 3-1 on Sept. 26, earning a 3-0 triumph over Creed on Sept. 28, and then recording a 3-1 decision against Hale-Ray last week.

Boys’ Soccer

HK was shut out by Old Saybrook 3-0 on Sept. 26 and then bounced back with a 1-0 win over Morgan on Sept. 28. HK is now 3-4 this year.

Girls’ Soccer

The Cougars dropped a 3-1 decision to Old Saybrook on Sept. 26, lost 4-0 to Sheehan the next day in a game that saw Meghan O’Brien make six saves, and then closed the week by taking a 3-0 defeat to Morgan on Sept. 29.

Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country

On Sept. 27, both Cougars’ cross country squads opened their dual-meet seasons by traveling to Durham to compete in the Shoreline Large School League Meet against host Coginchaug, Valley Regional, Morgan, North Branford, and Cromwell. Both teams were undefeated on the afternoon to start the year with 5-0 records.

The boys’ team ran a controlled race as a pack up front to distance themselves from the field. HK defeated Coginchaug 25-35, Cromwell 15-49, plus Morgan, Valley Regional, and North Branford by 15-50 finals. Finishing together in places three through eight with the same time of 17:54 for the 3.1-mile course were juniors Andrew Meredith, Daniel Schumann, Jonah Spector, Michael Callis, and Conor McCabe, plus senior tri-captain Doug Brown. Sophomore Seth Freeman placed 11th in a time of 18:10.

The girls went up against their rivals from Coginchaug and ran a smart, tactical race to edge out a victory by a score of 27-29. The girls also defeated Cromwell (15-47), Valley (17-46), Morgan (19-44), and North Branford (15-50). Cougars were led once again by junior tri-captain Kelsey D’Amico, who won the race in a time of 20:20 for the 3.1-mile course. Also having outstanding races were teammates junior Lexie Bouthiliier at fifth (20:47), senior tri-captain Lizzie Early in sixth (20:58), junior Julie Kelly at 10th (22:21), junior Grace Lindell in 11th (22:35), and junior Maggie Fisher in 13th (23:09).

Previously on Sept. 24, HK traveled to Warwick, Rhode Island to compete at the Ocean State Invitational. The meet consisted of over 90 schools from New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.

The boys’ varsity squad competed in the championship race against some of the top ranked teams in the entire Northeast. The boys finished in eighth place and were led by Meredith and Schumann, who placed 14th and 16th by running 16:20 and 16:21, respectively, on the 5,000-meter course. Following them across the line were Spector in 26th (16:38), Callis at 57th (17:22), McCabe in 71st (17:53), Brown at 72nd (17:57), and sophomore Kyle Criscuolo at 82nd (18:21). The JV team, led by Noah MIller, Seth Freeman and Kurt Sodergren, placed first out of 28 teams to take the title.

The girls’ varsity team also had a strong race and placed seventh out of 30 teams in its competition. D’Amico completed the 3.1-mile course in a time of 19:59 to place 12th. Following her were teammates Bouthiliier in 20th (20:16), Lizzie Early at 42nd (20:57), Kelly in 100th (22:08), Fisher at 101st (22:10), and Lindell in 109th (22:18).
