HK Boys’ Cross Country Takes First at a Big Meet in New York; Volleyball Goes to 7-0

Cross Country

On Sept. 17, the Haddam-Killingworth cross country program competed at the Suffern Invitational at Bear Mountain State Park in New York. The teams competed on a challenging three-mile course against 70 schools from New York and New Jersey. This was the opening race for both varsity squads and the HK boys’ team began its season with a successful start as the Cougars not only came away with the team title in the C race, but were also the top team overall out of the 72 schools in attendance. The girls’ team, battling injuries and illness, ran a solid race and placed fourth out 18 teams in the C race and were 11th overall among the 70 clubs that competed.

The boys’ team was led by a trio of juniors as Andrew Meredith placed fourth in a time of 16:26 and was closely followed by Daniel Schumann at seventh (16:34) and Jonah Spector at eighth (16:34). Rounding out the scoring for the Cougars were junior Michael Callis, who placed 22nd (17:16); and senior tri captain Doug Brown in 28th (17:30). They were followed by junior Conor McCabe at 41st (17:56) and sophomore Kyle Criscuolo in 47th (18:06).

The girls were led by junior tri-captain Kelsey D’Amico, who placed in seventh overall in a time of 19:40. Coming in behind her were teammates Lizzie Early in 20th (20:51), junior Lexie Bouthillier at 24th (21:25), junior Maggie Fisher in 33rd (22:17), and junior Grace Lindell at 40th (22:46).

On Sept. 21, the HK boys’ and girls’ JV cross country teams competed at the Run To The Sun Invitational at Coginchaug High School. The teams went up against nine other schools, including East Catholic, Coginchaug, Old Lyme, Morgan, and Old Saybrook.

The boys dominated the race and swept the first eight places to cross the line and win the team competition with a perfect score of 15, easily outdistancing runner-up Coginchaug, which had 71 points. Leading the way for the JV squad was senior tri-captain Noah Miller, who won the race in a time of 18:44 on the 3.1-mile course. Following him across the line was a pack of Cougars in sophomore Seth Freeman in second (18:47), junior Kurt Sodergren at third (19:16), senior tri-captain Ryan MacLeod in fourth (19:28), and junior Colin Regan for fifth (19:30) to round out the scoring.

The girls also had a strong race and placed third as a team with 63 points. They were led by junior Julie Kelly, who has now placed first in her first two career cross country races. Kelly won the race in a time of 23:08 and was followed by senior Allison Zupan in sixth at a time of 25:01 for the 5,000-meter course. Coming in behind Zupan were here teammates in sophomore Cami Swaine in 16th (26:34), senior Sarah Winner at 20th (27:21), and freshman Ava Lindell at 24th (27:21).

Volleyball

The Cougars’ volleyball team swept Old Lyme on Sept. 19, recorded a 3-0 victory versus North Branford on Sept. 21, and then finished the week at a sensational 7-0 thanks to a 3-1 triumph over Valley Regional on Sept. 23.

Football

HK took a 34-12 loss to a 3-0 Stafford-East Windsor-Somers team on Sept. 23. The Cougars are now 0-3 this year.

Alex Segaline scored two touchdowns on a pair of 1-yard runs. On the season, Segaline has rushed for five TDs and caught two touchdown passes.

The Cougars next host Coginchaug (1-2) on Friday, Sept. 30 at 6:30 p.m.

Girls’ Soccer

Haddam-Killingworth grabbed its first win of the season with a 4-1 decision over Coginchaug on Sept. 20 as HK moved to 1-3 on the season. Maddie Kiely had a hat trick and Autumn Coady also scored a goal for HK. The Blue Devils outshot the Cougars 22-6, but Meghan O’Brien made 21 saves in net for the Cougars.

Boys’ Soccer

The Cougars moved to 2-2 with a 3-2 win over Hale-Ray in their lone contest that took place on Sept. 22 last week.
