The Indians’ girls’ cross country squad swept a quad-meet on Sept. 20 against Amity (23-38), Hillhouse (15-50), and the host the Sheehan Titans (20-42). With the wins, Guilford improved to 6-0 on the season.
Guilford had several top 10 finishers with Carla Wiesler in third at 22:15, only eight seconds off the winning pace; along with Meredith Bloss in fourth (22:18), plus a pack of runners in the No. 6 through 9 slots with Claire Keanna (23:01), Tessa Fridell (23:12), Emma Bonz (23:47), and Ellie Wiesler (23:48).
Boys’ Cross Country
Guilford split a pair of decisions on Sept. 20 in a meet at Sheehan by losing 21-40 to Amity, but defeating the host Titans 16-45 to move its dual-meet record to 4-1.
Guilford saw a pair of performances in the top 10 as Finn Davidson placed third (18:12) and Joshua Stern was fourth (18:16).
On Sept. 24, at the Ocean State Invitational in Rhode Island, Guilford finished 10th out of 31 teams in its section. The team was led once again by strong showings from senior co-captains FDavidson, who took 15th in 16:40; and Stern, who was 21st with a 16:48.
Boys’ Soccer
The Indians blanked East Haven 6-0 at home on Sept. 19 for their first victory of the campaign. Guilford then notched a 1-0 victory over Notre Dame-West Haven the next night at home. The Indians moved to 2-1-1 in the SCC Oronoque Division with the win.
The Indians later tied Xavier 1-1 on Sept. 23 on the road and are now 2-2-2 overall this year.
Girls’ Soccer
Guilford notched a 1-0 shutout of Foran on Sept. 20 and then routed another SCC Hammonasset foe in Branford by a 7-1 final the next day for a record of 3-0 in the division. Guilford ended the week with a 2-1 loss to Cheshire on Sept. 23 for an overall mark of 3-2-1.
Volleyball
Guilford swept West Haven on Sept. 19 with set scores of 25-16, 25-4, and 25-13 in an Oronoque Division matchup. Natalie Stanton had eight kills with two aces, Amanda King notched eight kills to go along with six aces, and Trinity Flynn added seven kills.
The Indians then took a five-set loss (23-25, 25-21, 24-26, 25-20, 8-15) to Branford on Sept. 21. King had 25 digs and 12 kills, Cia Mirrione also had a dozen kills to go with 14 digs, and Jill Wirth had 29 assists.
After that, Indians swept Career (25-11, 25-21, 25-13) on Sept. 23 to move to 4-3 overall and up its mark to 2-0 in divisional play. Mirrione had 11 kills, while Natalie Stanton added seven kills with 17 assists, three aces, and was 15-for-15 on serving
Football
Guilford went to 1-2 on the year after taking a 49-14 loss to Notre Dame-West Haven on Sept. 23 on the road at Veteran’s Stadium in West Haven.
The Indians were down 42-0 at halftime and then got on the board in the third quarter thanks to an Aaron Korik 34-yard TD rush. Jack Strand later connected with Corey Sondak on a 65-yard scoring strike in the fourth.
The Indians next go to Sheehan (0-3) to face their fellow SCC Tier 1 squad on Friday, Sept. 30 for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
