Valley Girls’ Soccer Sees a Little Bit of Everything; Field Hockey, Volleyball Take Two of Three

Girls’ Soccer

The Warriors’ girls’ soccer team experienced a mixture of everything last week by earning one win, playing to a tie, and taking a defeat. Valley blanked Old Saybrook 2-0 at home on Sept. 20, battled to a 1-0 draw at Morgan two days later, and then lost a 2-1 home decision versus North Branford on Sept. 24. Head Coach Lloyd Warren’s team is now 3-2-1 for the season.

Versus Old Saybrook, freshman Sam Calamari scored both goals for the Warriors with seniors Claudia Dalterio and Maleena Frazier supplying the assists.

For the Morgan tie, the Warriors’ goal was scored by senior Sydney Lee off a corner kick.

In the North Branford game, Frazier netted Valley’s goal on an assist from Dalterio. North Branford’s goalkeeper made 13 saves in the game.

Boys’ Soccer

Valley tied one game and lost its other contest to stand at 2-1-1 this season. On Sept. 20, the Warriors played to a 0-0 stalemate at Old Saybrook. Two days later, they hosted Morgan and took a 2-0 defeat.

In the Old Saybrook game, Valley received nine saves from goalie Buddy Haydu to come away with the draw.

Against Morgan, the game was scoreless at halftime before the Huskies scored twice in the first 10 minutes of the second half on their way to the win.

Field Hockey

Valley Regional claimed victory in two of its three games last week and is now 3-2 this fall. The Warriors prevailed 4-1 at Old Saybrook on Sept. 21, dropped a 2-1 decision to Haddam-Killingworth two days after that, and then blew out Somers 8-0 in a home game on Sept. 24.

Valley trailed Haddam-Killingworth 2-0 before Francesca Pisanzio scored from Laura Quinn in the second half to cut it to 2-1, which stood up as the final. Logan Burdick made seven saves for the Warriors.

Against Somers, Francesca Daniels had a monster game by scoring four goals and assisting on two others. Quinn found the back of the cage twice, while Cailtin Smith and Maria Pittsinger also scored for Valley. Smith added an assist and other helpers came from Ellie Tuscano, Annie Cooper, and Emily Peterson. Mia Cost played goal and had six saves for the shutout.

Volleyball

Valley raised its record to 5-2 after winning two of its three matches last week. The Warriors posted a 3-0 home shutout of Morgan on Sept. 19, notched a 3-1 victory in Cromwell on Sept. 22, and lost 3-1 at Haddam-Killingworth the following day.

In the Morgan win, Valley prevailed with set scores of 25-23, 25-19, 25-10. Jessica Paholski went 21-for-21 serving to go with 14 digs, 13 receptions, 10 kills, and four aces to help the Warriors blank the perennial powerhouse Huskies. Alex Figuenick tallied 24 receptions with 31 digs and one kill, Maddie Millard had 20 assists and a block, Emily McLaughlin had seven kills, Maddie Just recorded four kills and five digs, Rhyan Nedobity had three aces, three kills, three blocks, and three digs; and Electra Cassells added nine kills with three blocks and an ace.

Versus Cromwell, the Warriors won by the count of 23-25, 25-14, 25-15, 25-23. Figuenick had another great match by posting 31 receptions, 23 digs, and two kills. Millard served 12-for-12 and also handed out 29 assists to go with three digs and a pair of kills. Additionally, Clark went 10-for-10 serving with seven digs and five receptions, Paholski had 10 kills, 10 digs, eight receptions, and three aces; McLaughlin had 12 kills with eight digs, Just notched four kills, three digs, and an ace; Emily Hutchinson had three kills and a block, Nedobity threw down seven kills and also had five blocks with four aces, and Cassells had five kills, four assists, and two blocks for the Warriors.

Against Haddam-Killingworth, the Warriors lost 25-15, 25-11, 18-25, 25-20. Figuenick went 16-for-16 on the service line with ace and she also had 20 receptions, plus 15 digs. Millard had 14 assists with an ace and a block, Paholski totaled nine receptions, seven kills, one block, and an ace; Clark had eight receptions with two digs, McLaughlin chipped in with 12 digs, seven kills, and one block; Just had two digs with an ace, Nedobity had three blocks, two aces, and one kill; and Cassells recorded three kills with two blocks.
