Football

The Old Saybrook-Westbrook (OS-W) football team took its first defeat of the season on Sept. 17 by dropping a 26-15 contest against Pequot Conference Sassacus South Division rival Valley Regional-Old Lyme (VL-OL) at Old Lyme High School. The Rams are now 1-1 both overall and in the division this fall.

Trailing 14-0 in the third quarter, the Rams got on the scoreboard when Vincent Dyer (125 rushing yards) took one home from a yard out. The extra point kick was no good and Head Coach Mike Marone’s squad trailed 14-6. The Warriors used a short touchdown run to make it 20-6 at the end of three quarters, but Chase Cook scored on a 2-yard TD rush and then kicked the extra point to cut the deficit to 20-13. On the next series, Valley had a bad snap and the Rams’ Sloan True recovered at the Warriors’ 30-yard line. OS-W eventually had 4th-and-goal and threw a pass in the flat to try to get in, but the Warriors forced a fumble, recovered it, and now the had the ball inside their own 1.

The craziness continued as another bad snap resulted in the Warriors’ quarterback getting tackled by Cook in the end zone for a safety that brought the Rams within 20-15 with seven minutes left. As a result of the safety, VR-OL had to kick off from its own 20. The kick sailed over the heads of the Rams’ returners and rolled to the 4-yard line, where the Warriors pounced on it. On the next play, Valley scored from four yards out for a 26-15 command that stood up as the final tally.

Old Saybrook-Westbrok has this week off and then hosts SMSA-University-Classical (0-2) at Old Saybrook High School at noon on Saturday, Oct. 1.
