Field Hockey

The Cougars’ field hockey team blanked Old Saybrook 5-0 on Sept. 14 and then shut out non-league foe Suffield by a 3-0 margin on Sept. 16. With the wins, Haddam-Killingworth improved to 3-0 for the season.

Celia Payfa notched a hat trick for Haddam-Killingworth, plus Julia Kostek and Isabella Cosenza scored the other goals. Assists came from Molly Anderson (2) and Hannah Theriault. Abbie Bagnoli made a pair of saves as HK outshot the Rams 18-2.

Volleyball

Haddam-Killingworth finished the week at a perfect 4-0 following a 3-1 victory over Morgan on Sept. 12, a 3-2 win against Cromwell on Sept. 14, and then a 3-0 sweep of Coginchaug on Sept. 16.

Football

The Cougars hosted Morgan on Sept. 16 and took a 33-27 defeat to drop to 0-2 this fall. Morgan stopped HK on 4th-and-goal from the 3-yard line with under a minute to play to seal the win.

The game went back and forth throughout with Morgan (2-0) leading 20-14 at half. The Huskies needed a final defensive stand to stop HK on the Cougars’ last drive, which started at the Morgan 25 with just under three minutes remaining.

Alex Segaline scored touchdowns on rushes of 57 and 11 yards and he also reeled in 11-yard TD reception. Noah Vinci had a big night for the Cougars by reeling off several long runs, including a 51-yard scamper on the team’s final drive. Toby Callender also notched a 2-yard TD run on the night.

“The kids’ performance was outstanding for four quarters tonight and I told them I was proud of them,” said Head Coach Mike Baklik. “It was a tough loss, but the team took a big step forward tonight, and they’re starting to believe in themselves.”

Next up for HK is a trip to Stafford to take on Stafford-East Windsor-Somers (2-0) on Friday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m.

Cross Country

On Sept. 9, the HK cross country teams opened up their fall seasons as they competed at the Blue Dragon Invitational at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Middletown. The season opener for both the boys and girls squads was against 20 other schools, including Newington, Middletown, Rocky Hill, Sheehan, Northwest Catholic, Old Lyme, and Old Saybrook. It was a successful start to the season as, although several of the varsity runners did not compete, the HK JV teams had good performances in the very hot and humid conditions.

The boys’ team held out the varsity squad and only competed in the JV race, which was dominated by a pack of Cougars at the front. The team was paced by tri-captain Noah Miller, who placed as runner-up in a time of 19:41 on the 5,000-meter course. Coming in behind Miller was junior Kurt Sodergren in third (20:02), sophomore Seth Freeman at fourth (20:04), sophomore Tuckerman Wink in seventh (20:17), and senior Ryan MacLeod at 10th (20:37). The boys placed tops in the team scoring, beating out 19 other teams with a score of 26 points.

The girls’ JV team was led by junior Julie Kelly, who in her first cross country race, won the race with a time of 24:21 on the 3.1-mile course. She was followed across the line by senior Ally Zupan in sixth (26:37), sophomore Cami Swaine in 23rd (28:36), senior Sarah Winner for 24th (28:43), and senior Greta Nystrom at 33rd (29:35). The team placed third out of 19 teams in the race with 87 points. Although the varsity squad did not score as a team since several runners did not compete, HK still had some terrific performances, led by senior tri-captain Lizzie Early, who placed seventh in a time of 22:12. She was followed by junior Grace Lindell in 26th (24:13) and Maggie Fisher in 27th (24:19).

Boys’ Soccer

The Cougars took a 4-2 loss to Valley Regional on Sept. 13 and then rebounded with a 1-0 victory over Cromwell two days later. The Cougars stand at 1-2 on the season.

Girls’ Soccer

HK took a 4-0 shutout loss to Valley Regional on Sept. 12 and then dropped a 3-0 decision against Cromwell on Sept. 15.
