The Portland-Old Saybrook (P-OS) Little League Juniors All-Star baseball team for ages 13 and 14 recently captured the District 9 championship and then finished as the runner-up in the State Tournament after losing to Bristol in the final.

In the opening game of the State Tournament, P-OS lost to Bristol 9-3. However, the team bounced back to beat Moosup 13-3 in its second game as Toby Marineau had three hits and got the win on the mound, while fellow Old Saybrook resident Jack Colella added three hits, including a home run. Other Old Saybrook residents also contributed as Gabe Kaar had two base hits and Joe Bradley played solid defense at first base.

Next up was Somers, which P-OS defeated 9-2. Kaar was the winning pitcher and Colella had three more hits. Marineau led the way on offense with three hits and four RBI. Then in a must-win game to get to the championship contest, P-OS defeated Mansfield 13-0. Colella was exceptional in the field at shortstop by pulling an unassisted double play and he also had three hits. Marineau and Kaar had two base hits each and Bradley had one.

In the final, P-OS took a tough loss to Bristol again, this time by the score of 17-13. Colella went 2-for-2 with three walks and added a two-run homer. Kaar had three hits and Marineau added an RBI. P-OS completed its great run just one win shy of reaching the Northeast Regional in New Jersey.

Previously, P-OS had defeated Haddam 14-0 in the District 9 final to qualify for the State Tournament. Marineau went four innings, giving up one hit to get the win. Marineau and Colella each had four hits and Kaar added two more.
