08/18/2016 12:00 AMValley Shore YMCA Marlins swimmer Kayla Mendonca, a 13-year-old Madison resident, continues to build on her swimming career by competing on behalf of the Connecticut team at the Eastern Zone Age Group Championship meet that was held from Aug. 3-6 in East Meadows, New York. Mendonca competed against other state champions of the United States from Maine to Virginia at the meet and put together a stellar performance. Mendonca finished first overall in her age group for the 200-meter backstroke and she was also third in the 100 backstroke, seventh in the 100 freestyle, and 11th in the 800 freestyle. Mendonca additionally set new records in each of these events for the Marlins swim team.
