Madison Junior Legion Makes States; Seniors Still in the Mix

Junior American Legion Baseball

The Madison Junior Legion baseball squad owns a record of 10-8 in Zone 3 play and has qualified for the State Tournament. The top five teams in the zone make states, which begin on Saturday, July 16. Upon the conclusion of last week’s games, Madison stood in fourth place in Zone 3 and owned a 4.5-game lead over fifth place Meriden (6-13), plus a six-game advantage over sixth place East Haddam (5-15) with four games left in the regular season, thus clinching Post 79’s postseason spot.

Post 79 began last week by sweeping a doubleheader with East Haddam by 5-0 and 9-4 finals on July 2. Ian Tolis pitched a complete game shutout in the first victory, while Kevin Tracy, Will McIntosh, and Jake Salutari split the pitching duties in the 9-4 triumph.

Post 79 then notched a 2-1 victory over Wallingford on July 5. Graeme McGivern pitched a complete seven frames for Madison in that win. Madison took a 5-3 loss to Wallingford the next day.

Facing Guilford in its next series, Post 79 split a doubleheader on July 8 with a 5-0 loss before prevailing 2-1. Salutari went the distance in the victory.

On July 10, Madison swept a double dip from Guilford with 14-7 and 3-0 finals. In the 14-7 contest, Phoenix Billings was 4-for-5 with three RBI, plus McIntosh went 2-for-3. In the shutout, McGivern pitched a complete game with four strikeouts, four hits allowed, and two walks issued.

Senior American Legion Baseball

The Post 79 Senior Legion baseball team is still in contention to qualify for the State Tournament entering the last week of the regular season. The top four teams in Zone 3 make it and, upon the completion of last week’s slate, Post 79 was in sixth place at 8-11, trailing third place Guilford (12-12), fourth place East Haddam (10-10), and fifth place Meriden (9-11). The State Tournament begins on Saturday, July 16.

First up last week, Post 79 took a 10-2 loss against Wallingford on July 5. The next day, Post 79 pulled out a 5-3 victory in eight innings thanks to plating a pair of runs in the extra frame. Madison came back to prevail after trailing 3-0 through four innings. Magnus Grigor got the win on the mound, plus Jack Kallinich had two hits, including the game winner, with three RBI. Joe Hill had three hits, while David Nuzzo added two base knocks and an RBI. Post 79 swept the doubleheader with a 4-0 shutout in the night cap.

On July 8, Madison took a 9-1 loss to Guilford. Post 79 then dropped 15-6 and 11-0 decisions against Guilford the next day. Madison lost 3-2 in the series finale with Guilford on July 10 and also took a 1-0 defeat to East Haddam on that day.

The previous weekend, Post 79 took a 4-1 loss to East Haddam on July 1. Aaron Rubin and Michael Elias took to the mound for Madison in that one.
