The Guilford Senior Legion baseball team completed its regular season by winning several contests to considerably help its chances of qualifying for the State Tournament. The top-four teams in the zone make states and, upon the conclusion of last week’s slate, Post 48 was in third place with a record of 12-12—ahead of East Haddam (10-10), Meriden (9-11), and Madison (8-11). The State Tournament begins on Saturday, July 16.

Post 48 first split a pair of lopsided contests with Wallingford on July 2. Guilford prevailed 14-5 in the opener before Wallingford responded with a 14-1 victory for the second game. Post 48 nabbed a 13-2 command following an eight-run fourth inning for the 14-5 victory.

The following day, the two clubs again split a double dip with Guilford winning 6-4 and losing 3-2. Tripper Rams went the distance in the victory, as did Cargos in the loss.

Post 48 then took on East Haddam and lost a 9-4 contest in the series opener on July 5. Guilford rebounded with a 4-1 victory the next day.

Guilford scored a big 9-1 win over rival Madison on July 8 with Jack Strand pitching a full seven innings. Post 48 kept the winning vibes going with a doubleheader sweep of Madison the next day by final scores of 11-0 and 15-6. Post 48 completed the series sweep with a 3-2 win on July 10.

Post 48 picked up a couple of recent victories to improve to 3-15.

First, Guilford was swept in a doubleheader by Wallingford on July 2 by 2-1 and 11-1 finals. In the one-run contest, Wallingford struck with a run in the first before Post 48 tied it in the top of the fourth. Wallingford then plated what held up as the game-winning run in the fifth.

On July 3, Guilford earned its second win of the summer with a 3-2 triumph against Wallingford. Austin Fix and JP Murtaugh pitched for Post 48 in the victory.

Post 48 resumed action on July 6 and took a 6-0 loss to East Haddam.

On July 8, Guilford split a doubleheader with rival Madison by shutting out Post 79, 5-0, in the first game before taking a 2-1 loss.
