The Indians saw two athletes claim first-place medals with another breaking a school record that had stood since well before anyone on the team was even born at last week’s SCC Championship.

Senior Shane O’Connor finished first in the shot put, junior Omar Gebril won the 400-meter dash, and senior Ryan Brennan broke North Haven’s 1,600 record while placing second in the event. North Haven finished fifth among 20 clubs by scoring 46 points at Sheehan on May 23.

O’Connor notched his seventh career postseason win by throwing the shot 50 feet-7.25 inches to defeat Amity runner-up Cameron Greifenberger (49-0.5). Gebril’s fifth postseason victory came in highly dramatic fashion as he ran 49.51 in the 400 to beat Shelton’s Patrick English (49.52) by just 0.01 of a second and defend his title. Gebril also won the 400 at last spring’s West Sectional and SCC championships to go with first-place finishes in the 600 at sectionals and the Class L State Championship during this winter’s indoor season. Meanwhile, Brennan’s mark of 4:21.89 in the 1,600 eclipsed the previous North Haven school record that had been set in 1968. Brennan placed behind Guilford’s Ben Siciliano (4:21.29) to take second. O’Connor also finished fourth in the discus (120-0) and Brennan was sixth for the 3,200 at 9:58.68.

Senior Anthony Valentino also scored points for the Indians by placing second in the javelin with a throw of 158-10, which was only behind Cheshire’s Ethan LaChance (164-6). Also scoring was the 4x400 relay of Gebril, senior Michael Greene, junior Jordan Tong, and senior Emadi Okwuosa, which recorded a mark of 3:33.73.

Additionally, senior Caleb Crosby threw to 10th place in the shot put (39-6.5) with senior Aaron Wilson in 13th (38-6.25) and sophomore Eric Millard placing 15th (38-4.5), sophomore Brad Schweikert finished 13th in the 800 (2:05.40), senior Nick McCrevan cleared 10 feet in the pole vault and took 16th place, junior Todd Richards finished 16th in the triple jump (36-4), while sophomore Brian Daly took 18th (35-6.5), and Richards was also 17th for the preliminaries of the 110 high hurdles at 18.85 with sophomore Jalon Simms in 22nd (20.16) and McCrevan in 23rd (18.29). Also, the Indians’ 4x800 relay of Schweikert, sophomore Gabe Durante, junior Forest King, and Tong finished 11th at 8:51.99.

North Haven saw three athletes take second place at the SCC Championship with one of them breaking a school record at Sheehan on May 24.

Freshman Erica Marriott was the athlete who made history for the Indians. Marriott ran a time of 12.31 seconds in the preliminaries of the 100-meter dash, which is the fastest mark in program history when using automatic timing. She then came back to run 12.45 in the finals to finish just 0.04 seconds behind Lauralton Hall’s Kathryn Kelly and take second place. Senior Sonia Atluru reached 5 feet to place second for the high jump. Kelly also won that event as both she and Atluru reached 5 feet, although Kelly won because she achieved that height in fewer attempts. Junior Sarah Vanacore matched her personal record by throwing 35 feet-3 inches for second in the shot put and only placed behind Shelton’s Samantha Stevens (41-1.5). Marriott was also third in the long jump (16-6), Vanacore placed fourth in the discus (102-0), Atluru took 17th in the long jump (14-10). As a team, the Indians scored 41 points and finished eighth out of 20 squads.
