Tigers Send Four Teams to SCC Finals; McShane Takes Conference Pole Vault Title

Girls’ Tennis

The No. 3 seed Hand girls’ tennis defeated No. 6 Cheshire 6-1 in the SCC Division I Tournament first round on May 23, after which the Tigers edged Lauralton Hall 4-3 to advance to face top-seeded Amity for the title at Yale on Thursday, May 26.

Versus Cheshire, victories came from Lee Jiaen (6-1, 6-0), Ellie Weinstein (6-1, 6-1), and Olivia Hiller (6-3, 6-2), plus the tandems of Ryann Corniello and Alicia Imbergamo (6-0, 6-1), Sheila Flaherty and Sabrina Colonese-DiBello (6-1, 6-0), and Renee Tracy and Grace Squitiero (6-0, 6-0).

Hand, which was 13-3 in the regular season, next begins the Class M State Tournament on Monday, May 30 with first round play.

Boys’ Tennis

No. 2 Hand defeated Fairfield Prep 6-1 in a SCC Division Tournament semifinal on May 25 at Yale. The Tigers advanced to the final the next day against top-seeded Amity.

The Tigers went 17-1 in the regular season and Head Coach Dawn Fagerquist was named the SCC Division I Girls’ Coach of the Year. Hand begins the Class L State Tournament on Saturday, May 28.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The top-seeded Tigers’ girls’ lacrosse team defeated No. 4 Lauralton Hall on May 24 at Cheshire in a SCC Tournament semifinal—marking Hand’s fourth-straight trip to the championship game. Taylor Scully had four goals and seven assists, plus Cameron Ruberti found the back of the cage five times. The Tigers (15-2) will play for their second-straight conference crown at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 26 in West Haven versus No. 2 Cheshire. Following that, the Tigers begin the Class M State Tournament on Tuesday, May 31.

Boys’ Lacrosse

No. 4 Hand took an 11-3 loss to top-ranked Fairfield Prep in a SCC Tournament semifinal on May 24. Zakery Santoemma, Liam Gottlick, and George McGuirk each netted a goal. Next up for the 10-7 Tigers is the Class M State Tournament, which begins on Wednesday, June 1.

Boys’ Volleyball

No. 2 Hand defeated No. 3 Shelton 3-1 (23-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-22) in a SCC Tournament semifinal on May 25 at home to advance to its first SCC final since 2011 with a game at No. 1 Cheshire at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 27.

After SCCs, the Tigers, who were 9-9 in the regular season, begin the Class M State Tournament on Wednesday, June 1.

Softball

No. 6-seeded Hand defeated No. 3 Foran 9-6 on the road in a SCC Tournament quarterfinal on May 25. The Tigers advanced to a semifinal at 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 26 against No. 2 Lauralton Hall at West Haven. A win there would put the Tigers in the final on Saturday, May 28.

After SCCs, Hand, which was 11-9 for the regular season, begins the Class L State Tournament on Thursday, May 31.

Baseball

8th-seeded Hand took a 7-5 loss to top-ranked Amity in a SCC Tournament quarterfinal on May 25. The Tigers finished 7-14 in a season that saw them claim the SCC Hammonasset Division title.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Hand finished with 31.5 points to finish 11th out of 20 teams at the SCC Championship at Sheehan.

Devon McShane captured his second pole vault title of this postseason with a height of 13 feet, beating out Jared Hubler from Foran (12-6). Additional showings for the Tigers included Collin Roth, who was eighth in the 3,200 (10:04.91); while Troy Lefler finished seventh in the 110 hurdles (16.43); the 4x400 relay of Garrett Noonan, Matt Parker, John Lisi, and Max Veth was third (3:30.50); the 4x800 of Noonan, Roth, Lisi, and Sean Collins raced to seventh (8:28.80); Mike Healey tied for eighth in the high jump (5-6); Lefler was sixth for the long jump (19-11); Healey placed sixth with the triple jump (39-6); plus Garrison Fenner was fifth for the javelin (149-6).

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Tigers finished 15th with 16.5 points out of 20 schools at the SCC Championship on May 24 at Sheehan.

Performances included Gabby Harmon coming in eighth for the 200 in 26.78 before finding fifth in the 400 with a time of 1:00.91. Also, Megan Phillips was fourth in the 800 (2:22.37) and Gabby Egidio followed her at seventh (2:24.88), plus Erin Naclerio tied for fourth in the pole vault (8-0).

Girls’ Golf

The Tigers stayed undefeated with a 183-224 decision over Avon on May 23.

Erin and Emily Schroeder shared medalist honors with a 42. Emma Boey shot a 45, while Emily Kuck hit a 54, Josie Anderson a 60, and Colleen Gallagher a 64.

In a 190-227 win over Avon on May 25, Gabby Martin medaled with a 38 and also competing were Emily (47) and Erin (49) Schroeder, along with Boey (56) and Kuck (58). Hand moved to 15-0 with this victory.
