Rams’ Girls’ Lacrosse Reaches Conference Championship; Tennis Teams Surge Down the Stretch

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Old Saybrook girls’ lacrosse team won a hard-fought 10-9 overtime match versus Haddam-Killingworth in the Shoreline Conference Tournament semifinals on May 24. With the victory, 2nd-seeded Old Saybrook improved to 11-6 and advanced to the championship game on Thursday, May 26 at 7 p.m. at Connecticut College against top-seeded Old Lyme (16-1), which defeated Morgan 17-10 in the other semi.

The Rams were down early versus H-K, but battled back to grab the lead at the break. In the second half, it was low-scoring battle as the defenses dug in. Old Saybrook appeared to get the game-winner with 23 seconds to play, but and official called a charge to negate the score. That kept the game deadlocked at 9-all and forced the extra session. On the Rams’ second possession in overtime, Maggie Smith fed the ball to Paige Gumkowski, who beat one defender and shot it past the keeper for the game-winning goal. Gumkowski finished with four goals and one assist. Mandy Beck had three goals and one assist, Maggie Smith scored three, Kendall Hartt had two goals, Kelsey True scored one, and Madison Hartt had an assist. Riley Roarick played a great game in the net and finished with 11 saves.

Boys’ Tennis

Old Saybrook continued its blistering streak to end the regular season with 17-straight victories as the Rams defeated Coginchaug 6-1 on May 24. Old Saybrook finished at 19-1 for the third-consecutive year.

In singles, Saba Cecunjanin bageled Garrett Puchaliski 6-0, 6-0; Danny Capuano won over Tom Seibert, 6-1, 6-0; Scott Cabral shut out Conrad Korzon 6-0, 6-0; Peter Blank blanked Bryce Fleck 6-0, 6-0; and Aidan Reid held Alexander Stephan scoreles,s 6-0, 6-0. In doubles, the No. 1 team of Tenzing Kunchok and Jason Rothman took a rare defeat versus Kyle Judson and Sam Temple, 6-3, 6-3. Enes Cecunjanin and Bailey Noack beat Dom Pascarelli and Kyle Babier 6-1, 6-1.

Girls’ Tennis

On May 23, Old Saybrook defeated Old Lyme 5-2 on the road, after which the Rams won at Coginchaug 4-3 for eighth-straight win and 16th. Old Saybrook went 16-4 for the regular season.

In singles play, the Rams swept Old Lyme with Rosie Rothman topping Keelin Hurtt 6-3, 7-5; while Tanya Gianitsos won in three sets versus Emily Brault, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4; Erin Stangel topped Brynn McGlinchey 6-0, 6-1; and Isabella Luciani beat Caroline Montanaro 6-2, 6-1. In doubles, the Rams dropped two of three with Jill Murphy and Emma Rogan defeating Silja Forstein and Kellie Sablone 6-3, 6-2.

Golf

On May 24, Old Saybrook hosted Morgan and Cromwell and lost a pair at Fenwick Golf Course. The Huskies won overall with a score of 156. Cromwell followed that with a 167, and Old Saybrook shot 174 as a team.

For Old Saybrook, James DePalermo (42) and Kyle Savino (42) were the low men, whole Dean Noble shot one back at 43. Anthony Karg finshed with a 47 and Nick Malinconico shot 48. Old Saybrook dropped to 5-5 in the Shoreline Conference with the loss.

At Fenwick on May 25, Old Saybrook defeated Wheeler 162-205. Savino took medalist honors with a 37, DePalermo shot 41, as did Karg (41), Malinconico hit 43, and Nobile went for 47.

Baseball

Old Saybrook’s six-game winning streak came to an end when the Rams lost at home to St. Bernard, 4-2, on May 23. The Rams finished the regular season at 8-12 and with a berth in the Class S State Tournament.

Softball

In its final game of the season, Old Saybrook lost 14-0 to non-conference opponent Ledyard at home. The Rams ended the season at 2-17.

In the game, Ledyard pitcher Chloe Hespler pitched a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts. Old Saybrook’s only baserunner was Hannah LeMire, who walked. Sophomore Carly Michaud took the loss on the mound for the Rams.

Also, Rams’ junior catcher Megan Schulmeister was named an Honorable Mention to the All-Shoreline Conference Team.
