Morgan Boys’ Lacrosse Makes Shoreline Final; Mozzochi Wins Both Hurdles Events in Conference Meet

Boys’ Lacrosse

On May 24, the No. 3 seed Morgan boys’ lacrosse team went on the road and defeated No. 2 North Branford 16-12 to advance to the Shoreline Conference Tournament championship game on Thursday, May 26 at 5 p.m. at Connecticut College against top-seeded Old Lyme, which defeated Haddam-Killingworth 10-9 in the other semifinal.

Jake Anselmo led the way for Morgan (10-7) with six goals and one assist, Mateo Zumpano was right behind him scoring five goals and one assist, Anthony Choronzy had four goals, and Zak Johnson added one goal and one assist. Morgan led 3-2 after one period and held a slim 7-6 lead at the half. Morgan upped the margin to 11-9 entering the fourth period and then played their its at the most-important time by scoring five more goals and allowing three to gain the 16-12 victory. Senior Brendan Kyhn made five saves in the goal.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The No. 4 seed Morgan girls’ lacrosse team lost at top seed Old Lyme, 17-10, on May 24 in the Shoreline Conference semifinals. The Huskies (8-9) now get ready to play in the Class S State tournament next week.

Girls' Outdoor Track

Morgan had a great showing and placed fourth with 73.5 points in the Shoreline Conference Championship on May 25 in Durham. The Huskies were led by senior Kate Mozzochi, who won the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 47.70 seconds, as well as the 100 high hurdles at 15.71.

Mozzochi, Courtney Carroll, Nola Neri, and Allison Gardner teamed up for second place in the 4x400 relay and were clocked at 4:10.64. In the other relay races, Morgan fared well as the team of Carroll, Kate Daley, Allison Gardner, and Liz Granfield finished fourth at 10:03.90 in the 4x800, while Alyssa LeMay, Jordan Suraci, Mikayla Mancini, and a Neri placed fourth in the 4x100 (52.10). Daley showed well in the 3,200 with a fourth-place finish at 11:54.8. Neri was fourth in the 200-meter dash (26.95) and LeMay grabbed ninth (27.69) and Neri also took sixth in the 400 (1:02.70). In the 100 hurdles, Alyssa Robinson placed seventh (17.34). For the field events, Hannah Zirklebach posted a height of 4 feet-6 inches in the high jump for third, Tori Barron was third in the shot put with a throw of 30-6 and threw 89-10 in the javelin for fifth place, plus LeMay went a 15-4 in the long jump for eighth.

Boys' Outdoor Track

The Huskies tied for 11th place with 14.2 points at Shoreline Conference meet and had some solid performances in various events.

Morgan's best finish came in the 4x100 relay with the team of Justin Navarra, Jhan Bermeo, Jacob Bzowski, and Erik Maertz grabbing the bronze in 46.52 seconds. The 4x800 relay recorded a sixth-place finish in 9:10.03 behind Michael Fiorillo, Brett Martin, Al Viglione, and Thomas Southwood. Fiorillo, Anes Gadun, Navarra, and Southwood grabbed eighth place in the 4x400 (3:52.65) and Gadun had a sixth-place finish in the 100-meter high hurdles (17.59). Navarra took eighth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.90. In the high jump, Brendan Smith impressed with a leap of 5 feet-2 inches, which was good for eighth.

Baseball

The Morgan baseball team defeated Portland 5-4 on May 23 in the quarterfinals of the Shoreline Conference Tournament, after which the Huskies took a 2-1 defeat at home versus Valley Regional in the semis on May 25.

In the Portland victory, the game-winning play came in the bottom of the seventh inning with the score tied at 4-all when senior captain Will Fritz crossed the plate on a bizarre double steal that included a throwing error as Morgan stole the game from Portland (12-9). With one out and runners on first and second, Portland pitcher Roland Thivierge threw one in the dirt that got away from his catcher. On the miscue, Fritz took third, while Liam Neri left first base late and the Portland catcher’s throw to second sailed into the outfield, allowing Fritz to come home for the winning run. Chad Neri went the distance striking out six and got the win for Morgan, to improve to 8-0. Madden Ward and Nick Caprio each had two hits for the Huskies.

Two days later, Morgan was edged by Valley Regional and dropped to 17-5 on the season. The Huskies will next play in the state tourney.

Softball

Morgan won both its last two games of the regular season and finished at 15-5. First, the Huskies defeated Hale-Ray 6-2 at home on May 23. Next, Morgan beat Suffield 7-4 on the road for its sixth win in a row.

The Huskies are competing in the Shoreline Conference Tournament as the No. 3 seed and host No. 6 Westbrook in the quarterfinals on Thursday, May 26.

Girls’ Tennis

On May 23, Morgan defeated Haddam-Killingworth 4-3 to close out its season with a record of 7-13. In singles, senior Riley Smith showed grit by defeating Abby Schultz in three-sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, and Gabriella Rodriguez topped Alivia Smith in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. In doubles play, Brenna Smith and Lily Cummings beat Jacie Hamilton and Shayna Pazsak 6-3, 6-0 and Grace Hull and Yashveen Rai won over Hannah Stankiowica and Nikki Clementel, 6-2, 6-1.

Golf

On May 24, Morgan traveled to Fenwick Golf Course to face host Old Saybrook and Cromwell and Huskies prevailed over both opponents with a low score of 156. Cromwell placed second at 167 and Old Saybrook shot 174 as a team.

Morgan’s Burton Caldwell was the day’s medalist with a 35, Kevin Daley shot 39, Jack Bugg came in at 40, Mike Van Ness finished with a 42, and Olivia Powers shot 46 for the Huskies, who improved to 17-5-1 on the year and 8-2 in the Shoreline Conference.

Earlier in the week, Morgan defeated Haddam-Killingworth on May 23 at Black Birch Golf Course by the score of 170-185. The medalist was Daley at 38, followed by Bugg (42), Cladwell (45), and Van Ness (45).
