Guilford earned its fifth win of the season by edging North Haven 4-3 on May 2. In the victory, Faren Roth (6-2, 6-4), along with the tandems of Molly Babbin and Sam Stofflet (6-1, 6-0), plus Kate Dinauer and Charlotte Babbin (7-5, 6-2), were victorious.
The Indians then earned their sixth win with a 6-1 triumph over Waterford on May 5. Winners here included Claire Dinauer (6-0, 6-0), Roth (6-1, 6-0), and Molly Babbin (6-0, 6-1), plus the duos of Charlotte Babbin and Stofflet (6-0, 6-3), as well as Kate Dinauer and Emily Dietzko (6-3, 6-2).
Guilford finished the week with a 7-0 loss to Hand on May 7.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Guilford defeated Mercy 13-3 on May 5 to improve to 3-2 in the SCC this season. Indians’ goals were scored by Emma Jewett (4), Sarah DeLucia (3), Nicolette Spotlow (2), Olivia Clarke (2), Alex FItzgerald (1), and Hannah McDermott (1). Assisting were Bryce Makula (2), Jewett, DeLucia, Spotlow, and Clarke (1 each). Catherine Lawrence made eight saves as Guilford outshot the Tigers 26-11.
The Indians then concluded the week with a 13-11 loss to East Lyme on May 7. Scoring goals were Emma Jewett (4), Fitzgerald (3), Clarke (3), and Spotlow (1). Lawrence made 13 saves as the Indians (5-6) were outshot by a narrow 26-23 margin.
Girls’ Outdoor Track
The Indians lost a tri-meet on May 3 to Cheshire (80-66) and Shelton (105-45) in Cheshire to drop to 5-5 on the year. Top performances for Guilford included the 4x800 relay (Elissa Strand, Chloe Shaw, Kelsi Putnam, Andrea Basilicato), which took first in 10:23; Meredith Bloss, who won the 1,600 (5:39) and the 800 (2:35); Shaw, who was second in the 400 in 63.3; Rachel Lauzier, who was runner-up in the 200 (27.9); Jalynn McCown, who was second in the shot put (30-10); and Mallory Peters, who finished second in the discus (91-7).
“Tough meet against two bigger programs,” said Head Coach Jon Rivera. “We got a lot of work to do still to get to where we want to be at the end of the season.”
Later in the week at the Middletown Invitational, Strand placed fifth in the 400 in 63.54; Putnam was third in the 1,600 in 5:38.30; Bloss was runner-up in the 3,200 in 11:58.80; Meredith Peters came in fourth for the discus (96-6); McCown found sixth in the shot put (91-7); and the 4x800 (Strand, Putnam, Bloss, Jacqui Guerra) was fourth in 10:18.
