Yellowjackets’ Softball Clinches State Berth; Golf Gets First Win

Softball

The Yellowjackets officially clinched a spot in the State Tournament with a divisional victory over North Haven and then topped Career last week to improve to 9-2. The Easties are 5-0 in SCC Oronoque action with their final three division showdowns on the horizon through the next two weeks.

On April 25, East Haven defeated North Haven 13-6 as the bats were on fire late with the Yellowjackets scoring 11 runs in the final three innings. Allison Luzzi, Julia SanGiovanni, Fallon Speers, and Kara Hanson all had three hits, while Jessica Stettinger had two hits, including a home run, and five RBI. Hanson knocked home three runs and SanGiovanni brought home two. Freshman Taylor Myers started the game, pitching 4.2 innings and allowing five runs on five hits and four walks. She also struck out four batters. Selena Mauro earned the win in relief as she pitched 2.1 innings and struck out one.

On April 27, East Haven defeated Career 16-1 as Hanson had four hits, Speers three hits, and both SanGiovanni and Laura Anderson got two hits. Anderson pitched, allowing four hits over four innings while striking out five. Hanson closed the door in an inning of relief, getting a strikeout.

Baseball

East Haven jumped to 6-5 overall with wins over Wilbur Cross and Foran last week. Prior to the wins, the Yellowjackets lost 5-4 to division rival Branford on April 27.

Ryan Spano pitched well in the loss, according to Head Coach Butch Johnson, although East Haven was unable to get a big hit with runners on base. Senior captain Steve Cochrane had two hits.

On April 28, Nate Furino pitched six innings and earned the victory to move to 2-0 on the hill this season as East Haven topped Wilbur Cross 7-3. Furino and Cochrane both had two hits, plus Nick Kraszewski had three hits with two doubles.

On April 29, Nick Guarino pitched a complete game to produce a 4-3 victory over Foran. Guarino moved to 4-1 with the victory. Tyler Leone and Furino both had two hits in the win.

Golf

East Haven started last week at 0-3, but improved to 2-4 with wins over North Haven and Career.

On April 25, the Yellowjackets notched their first win of the season over North Haven, 212-214, at Alling Memorial Golf Club. Nick Maniscalco earned medalist honors as he shot a 41. Other scorers for East Haven were Matt Latella with a 55, AJ Bouthiller with a 55, and Mike Moscato with a 61.

On April 27, East Haven defeated Career 196-221 at Alling. Joe Aloi was the medalist as he shot a 42. Jim Godlewski shot a 47, Josh Palmer finished with a 50, and Joseph D’Albero shot a 57.

On April 28, Foran topped East Haven 197-201 at Alling. Scores for the round were Maniscalco with a 47, Stefan Daniw with a 48, Latella with a 52, and Bouthiller with a 54.

Boys’ Tennis

East Haven has dropped five-consecutive matches and is 2-7 for the season. The Easties have played every match on the road thus far and are looking forward to some home cooking this week.

Last week on April 25, the Yellowjackets lost to Hand 7-0. In the singles matches, Tony Cofrancesco lost 6-0, 6-0; Rob Proto lost 6-0, 6-0; Zack Zito lost 6-0, 6-0; and Brandan So was defeated 6-0, 6-0. In the doubles matches, Jake Zito and Spencer Goldberg lost 6-0, 6-0; Doug Comesanas and Rob Scalese were defeated 6-1, 6-0; and Seth Proto and Dave Popolizio lost 6-0, 6-0.

On April 29, Hamden defeated East Haven 4-3. Wins for the Yellowjackets came at No. 3 and 4 singles, as well as No. 3 doubles. Winners at singles were Zack Zito, 6-4, 6-4; and So, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. The doubles win was by Seth Proto and Popolizio, 6-1, 6-1. In the other matches, Cofrancesco lost 6-0, 6-0; Rob Proto lost 6-0, 6-4; Goldberg and Jake Zito lost 6-2, 6-3; and Comesanas and Scalese were defeated 6-2, 6-3.

Girls’ Tennis

The Easties last three matches last week as they were defeated by Sheehan 5-2, Branford 6-1, and Foran 5-2. As a result, the Yellowjackets have lost six-consecutive matches and are currently 2-7 overall.

Against Sheehan on April 25, the two wins for East Haven came at No. 2 and No. 4 singles. Devyn Gargano won at No. 2, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 and Nallely Magana was victorious 6-3, 6-3. In other singles matches, Jenna Pane lost 6-0, 6-0 and Sarah Harkins was defeated 6-2, 6-1. In doubles action, Giselle Ramirez and Karla Gonzalez lost 6-1, 6-0; Rachel Korwek and Toni Julianelle lost 6-1, 6-1; and Katie Schneer and Sandy Nguyen were defeated 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

On April 27 against Branford, Magana won 6-2, 6-0 to claim East Haven’s lone victory. In the other singles matches, Pane was defeated 6-2, 4-6, 6-2; Gargano lost 6-2, 6-0; and Harkins was defeated 6-2, 6-1. At doubles, Ramirez and Gonzalez lost 6-1, 6-3; Korwek and Julianelle lost 6-4, 7-5; and Schneer and Nguyen were defeated 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Yellowjackets remained at .500 in dual-meet competition with a 76-74 victory over Wilbur Cross and a 99-51 defeat to Mercy on April 27 in New Haven. East Haven saw three individual first-place finishes out of its team in the meet. They came from Katie Maffeo in the 800 at 2:30.17, Megan Kikosicki in the 200 at 26.8, and Molly Mazzucco in the high jump at 4 feet-8 inches. The 4x100 relay team of Annie Coleman, Haley Montestanto, Emily Maffeo, and Kikosicki raced to a time of 50.66 to claim first place, as well.
