T-Birds’ Track Broke One Record, Tied Another This Winter

Winnie Chan placed second in the high jump at the Shoreline Conference Championship meet and earned herself MVP honors for the North Branford girls’ indoor track squad.

The North Branford indoor track program put forth some quality results throughout the 2015-’16 winter season and the girls’ team even broke a school record, while tying another.

The T-Birds made a little bit of history at the Class S State Championship, where the 4x200 relay team of Jenna Bryden, Grace Little, Erika Chironno, and Jess Zumbo finished in ninth place with a time of 1:53.96. The quartet’s mark broke the school record of 1:54.2 that had been in 2013 by Emmy Dulak, Sara Olsen, Jordan Miket, and Zumbo.

Additionally, Deanna Sgambato’s leap of 7 feet in the pole vault at the Shoreline Conference Championship earned her a share of a North Branford school record, tying Colleen Kelleher (Class of 2009) and Alicia Abelson (2014) for that distinction.

North Branford’s boys finished in seventh place with 25 points at the conference meet and the girls’ team came in fifth with both seeing superb showings in the high jump, the 55-meter dash, and the 55 hurdles. Winnie Chan made Second Team All-Shoreline by taking second in the high jump at 4 feet-10 inches and Nina Robertson followed with a leap of 4-8 for third. Joselyn Streeto was fourth place in the event behind a jump of 4-6. In the 55 dash, Zumbo placed third in 7.84 seconds for the girls’ squad and Jason Alaska claimed fourth at 7.01 in the boys’ race. Also reaching a final heat was Catie Moran in the 55 hurdles by coming in third place with a time of 9.48.

Neither team scored points in the Class S State Championship meet, but each club had relay teams that recorded their season-best times. For the boys’ squad, the 4x200 of Jacob Marshall, Michael Odell, Alaska, and Christian Diaz finished 10th at 1:40.62 and the 4x400 of Alaska, Odell, Austin Gibilisco, and Michael Madoule ran a time of 3:50.24. For the girls, along with the 4x200 setting the school record, the 1,600 sprint medley relay group of Chironno, Little, Maggie Dulak, and Zumbo ran their top time of the season at 4:45.46.

Head Coach Floyd Parness hosted the program’s season-ending banquet on March 8 and handed some out awards to his athletes. Parness awarded Rookie of the Year nods to Marshall and Bryden; Desire and Dedication awards to Alaska and the entire girls’ senior class of Chironno, Holly Dulak, Maggie Dulak, Moran, and Zumbo; and the Most Valuable Player awards to Chan and Madoule. The 4-Year “Chris” Award, which is presented to four-year team members, was given to the girls’ five seniors, as well as Isaac Cammarata.
