The Middlesex Whalers A1 squirt ice hockey team that included Killingworth residents Owen Lelko and Samuel Reed, plus Dylan Ingram of Deep River, placed second in the Connecticut Hockey Tier IV Squirt State Tournament for those aged 9 and 10 in late March. Lelko played center and Reed and Ingram were both defensemen for the Whalers, who finished the season with an overall record of 29-17-6.

The Whalers earned a berth in the bracket by finishing second in an eight-team regional tournament in mid-March.

Seeded 4th in the six-team Tier IV draw, the Whalers went 2-1 in round robin games to earn a place in the semifinals. The Whalers knocked off the top-seeded Northwestern Icehawks 4-2 in a semifinal game before losing to 3rd-seeded Simsbury 3-0 in the state championship game.

The Whalers also won the Stick Season Showdown tournament in Stowe, Vermont earlier in the season.

The Whalers are a youth ice hockey organization for boys and girls who live in Middlesex County and other surrounding towns in the Middletown and Cromwell area. The Whalers offer instructional and competitive levels of play for children from ages 4 through high school. For more information on the team, visit www.mcyha.org.
