Zeng Breaks Own Open Record in Third-Straight Victory, Tigers 7th in Class L

Conor Miller and Hand boys’ swimming and diving pushed to a seventh-place finish for the Class L State Championship on March 16. The next day, teammate Teddy Zeng took first place at the State Open Diving Championship, while topping his own record score with a 608.80.

Hand’s Teddy Zeng claimed first place at the State Open Diving Championship for the third-straight season by scoring a record total of 608.80 points at Bulkeley High School on March 17. Zeng, a junior, defeated runner-up Timmy Luz of Darien, who scored a 467.35, and also surpassed his own Open record of 607.60. Zeng has also placed first at SCCs and states for three years in a row and posted a Class L record score of 604.55 in his victory at that meet on March 10.

“It’s very exciting to win the State Open three years in a row. Also, I think this year is very challenging because the past three weeks since SCCs my schedule has been very busy with SATs and school exams,” said Zeng. “So it’s been a lot of pressure, but I’m so happy and proud of myself because I did it.”

For the swimming section of the State Open on March 19 at Yale, Hand finished with grand total of 45 points and came in tied for 28th place. Chris Wu was 15th in the 100 backstroke (55.35) and 22nd in the 200 IM (2:01.77).

Previously, the Hand boys’ swimming and diving team finished seventh out of 18 teams with 285 points for the Class L State Championship at Wesleyan University.

For the swimming portion of the meet on March 16, the Tigers’ 200 medley relay of Nathan Imbergamo, Paul O’Connor, Conor Miller, and Wu was 10th (1:47.46); O’Connor was 12th for the 200 free (1:51.48); Wu finished sixth for the 200 IM (2:00.15); Jack Farricker swam to 18th with the 50 free (23.75); O’Connor was fifth in the 500 free (4:56.42); the 200 free relay of Jeffrey Puciato, Chris Hall, Michael Mendonca, and Farricker was 15th (1:39.54); Imbergamo finished 11th for the 100 backstroke (57.75); Davide Mendonca raced to 20th in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.05); and the 400 free relay in Farricker, Imbergamo, O’Connor, and Wu was ninth (3:30.91).
