HK Gymnastics 2nd in Class M; Adler Leads Wrestlers at Open, Reaches Regionals


Matthew Jenkins and HK wrestling competed at the State Open Championship on Feb. 26 and 27 at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.

Gymnastics

Haddam-Killingworth/Hale-Ray/Coginchaug scored 134.575 points and finished as the runner-up to Hand (135.875) at the Class M State Championship on Feb. 27 in Pomperaug.

Performers on that day for the Cougars included Erin Figurelli (9.025 for vault, 8.85 for bars and beam, 8.75 on floor); Michelle DeFilippo (8.6 for vault, 7.85 on bars, 7.9 on beam, 8.925 for floor); Karen DeFilippo (8.5 on vault and bars, 7.25 for beam, 8.975 on floor); Sierra Cazassa (8.05 on vault and beam); and Kate Ryan (8.0 on bars, 8.5 on floor).

Wrestling

HK placed 30th with 25 points at the State Open Championship on Feb. 26 and 27 at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.

Competing for the Cougars were Malakai Maher (113-pound weight class, going 0-2); Matthew Jenkins (132, 2-2); Aidan Korper (145, 0-2); Grayson Adler (152, finishing 4th after a 10-3 loss in the consolation final); Mackay Revis (160, 1-2); and David Wyzykowski (182, 0-2). By finishing fourth, Adler advanced to the New England Championship on Friday, March 4 and Saturday, March 5 at the Providence Career and Technical Center in Providence, Rhode Island.

Girls’ Indoor Track

For the Cougars at the New England Championship, Maddie Brandon was 18th in the 3,200 with a time of 11:28.26, plus the 4x800 relay of Mary Coletti, Kelsey D’Amico, Lexie Bouthillier, and Brandon placed 14th (9:56.58) on Feb. 28 at the Reggie Lewis Athletic Center in Boston.

Ice Hockey

Lyman Hall/HK/Coginchaug defeated Branford 6-3 on Feb. 24 to improve to 11-6-2. Hunter Boileau netted a hat trick, while Jack O Brien (2 goals) and Chris Blanchard (1) rounded out the scoring. Assisting were Kyle Roberts (2), along with Markus Trahan, Scott Bradley, Boileau, and Blanchard (1 apiece). Zach O’Toole made 30 saves on 33 shots.

The team then closed out the regular season at 11-6-3 following a scoreless tie against Wethersfield-Middletown-Rocky Hill on Feb. 27.

The Trojans will next play a SCC/SWC Division III Tournament semifinal as the top seed against No. 4 Bethel-Brookfield-Danbury at Milford Ice Pavilion at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 2. A win there would put them in the final on Friday, March 4 at Bennett Rink in West Haven at 8:15 p.m. against either No. 2 seed New Fairfield-Immaculate or No. 3 Newtown.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

HK finished the regular season with an 87-71 loss to Hamden on Feb. 24. The Cougars had 14 top-three finishes with second place in the 200 medley relay (Jake Torello, Will Carlson, Evan Stock, and Jacques Goosen); third in the 200 free (Allison Murphy); third for the 200 IM (Stock); second with the 50 free (Michael Morman); runner-up in the 100 butterfly (Stock); third for the 100 free (Morman); third with the 500 free (Murphy); runner-up for the 200 free relay (Morman, Chad Anderegg, Murphy, and Stock); first (Torello) and second (Simon Brown) in the 100 backstroke; tops (Will Carlson), runner-up (Nate Carlson), and third (Parker Goodwin) in the 100 breaststroke; plus first (Morman, Goosen, Will Carlson, and Torello) and second (Jonah Freeman, Nate Carlson, Goodwin, and Goosen) in the 400 free relay.

“A great final home meet for HK to close out its dual-meet season. Allison Murphy swum her season-best in the 200 free with a time of 2:17.25. Michael Morman swam a lifetime best and qualified himself to swim at the Class S state prelims in the 50 free [with a time of 24.97],” said Head Coach John MacDonald. “Morman’s success would continue as he swam another lifetime best in the 100 free and qualifying for the state prelims in the 100 free [at 54.31]. Jacques Goosen swam a season best in the 500 free, going a 6:38.46. Jake Torello swam a season-best and qualified for the state prelims in the 100 backstroke [in 1:04.60].”
