The Indians defeated Whitney Tech on Feb. 24 on Senior Night by a 77-51 final to finish 10-10 for the regular season.
The next night in the SCC Tournament first round, the 13th-seeded Indians upset No. 4 Notre Dame-West Haven on the road by a 46-45 margin. Jordan Krause had 20 points, Noah Rubino added 14, and Sam Dombroski contributed nine points.
Guilford then took a 64-47 defeat versus No. 5 Amity in the quarterfinal round at Branford on Feb. 27. Next up for the Indians (11-11) is the Class L State Tournament, which opens on Monday, March 7.
Wrestling
Guilford tied for 38th place with 18 points at the State Open Championship on Feb. 26 and 27 at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven. Competing for the Indians were Andrew Ignoto (126-pound weight class, going 1-2); Colin Rook (132, 2-2); Drew Tischer (152, 1-2); and AJ Moscato (170, 1-2).
Boys’ Ice Hockey
Guilford finished the regular season at 13-5-2 following a 2-1 loss to Cheshire in overtime on Feb. 24 and a 10-1 thumping of Milford on Feb. 27. The Indians also qualified for the SCC/SWC Division II Tournament as the No. 4 seed.
Against Cheshire, Stephen Thibault (from John DeLucia) had the lone Guilford goal in the second before the Rams struck in the third and then the extra session. The Indians were outshot 33-15 with Kyle Dwyer making 31 saves.
Facing Milford, goal scorers were Rick Sandella (2), Chris Cafiero (2), Alex Corso, Spencer Ryall, Joe Neleber, DeLucia, Alexander Mason-Mann, and Greg Litvyn. The goals for Mason-Mann and Litvyn were their first varsity scores. Assisting on goals were Corso (3), Sandella (3), DeLucia (2), Ryall (2), Matt Clifford, Thibault, Cafiero, Jake Watrous, and Mike LeTourneau. Guilford had 30 shots on net to Milford’s 20 with Dwyer making six saves, plus Eric Maliki had three.
“It was nice to bounce back from the Cheshire loss with a win in Milford in our last regular season game. The Cheshire game was an uphill battle all night long. They came out very fast and we had trouble wrestling puck control from them in the first period in particular. We kept battling though and we found ourselves with a 1-0 lead after Stephen’s goal. Kyle Dwyer really kept us in the game at times, turning away 31 shots. We played better after the first period, but we didn’t generate the scoring chances that we had been creating in other games. We had a couple of real good ones, however, we just couldn’t make them count to build the lead,” said Head Coach Ralph Russo. “Our game with Milford was quite different from the Cheshire game. We were able to quickly establish puck possession. Ricky Sandella’s goal from Alex Corso 20 seconds into the game was definitely the right way to start. Although Milford responded to tie the game, Ricky, Alex, and Spencer had a big night for us in tallying four goals and seven assists between them, while Stephen, John, and Chris were also involved in the offense.”
The league semifinal against top-seeded North Branford takes place on Thursday, March 3 at Bennett Rink in West Haven at 5:30 p.m. A win there puts the Indians in the final on Saturday, March 5 at that same site at 4 p.m. against either No. 2 seed North Haven or No. 3 Cheshire.
