The Yellowjackets ended their regular season with a 5-3 victory over Branford to finish with a mark of 7-9-4. Branford got out to an early 2-0 lead, but East Haven stormed back in the second period with three goals after outshooting the Hornets 28-1 for the frame. Goals were converted by Zach Paquin, Joseph D’Albero, and Nick Latella in the second to give East Haven an edge heading to the final frame. Branford tied the score early in the third, but Joe Aloi tallied the game-winner shortly thereafter and Latella later converted on the empty net. East Haven outshot Branford 42-19 in the win as Matt Twarowski stopped 16 shots to earn the victory in goal.
Wrestling
East Haven sent four wrestlers to the State Open Championship, which took place on Feb. 26 and 27 at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven. The team scored 13 points to finish in 44th place.
In the 106-ppound weight class, Victor Garcia opened action by beating Morgan’s Trevor Follo by pin at 4:00. He lost in the second round to Sean Johnson of Ellis Tech at 2:41. In the consolation round, Garcia was pinned at 1:51 by Muhammed Bilal of Rocky Hill. At 113, Antonio Lieto started by upending Michael Fedorko of Masuk by a 5-4 decision. He was then defeated by Gino Esposito of Foran, 10-4. After advancing a round in the consolation bracket by forfeit, Lieto saw his run come to a close with a 7-3 decision at the hands of Jack Pelley of East Windsor. At 126, Nick DeMorro was pinned at in 58 seconds by Trumbull’s Michael Mirmina. He then won an 11-9 decision over Killingly’s Zach Burgress in consolation action before being defeated by Timothy Roberts of East Hartford by pin at 4:46. Tim Seksinski competed at 195 and won his first matchup over Jackson King of Simsbury by a 9-4 decision. Harding’s Xavier Bass beat Seksinski 8-2 in the next round, sending him to the consolation round, where he lost to Ray Weiner of Shelton by a 2-1 decision.
Boys’ Basketball
East Haven finished its season at 6-14, but ended on a high note with a 68-37 victory over Platt Tech on Feb. 22. It was an even game for East Haven, which scored in double figures in all four quarters. Conor Reynolds led all scorers with 16 points with Albert Maio recording 14 and Nick Durso adding 12. The team made a total of 10 three-pointers in the victory with Maio hitting a team-best four of them.
