HK Wrestling 4th in States; Garrelts Runner-Up for 1,600 at Open


Grayson Adler was runner-up in the 132-pound bracket for HK wrestling at the Class S State Championship on Feb. 19-20 as the Cougars finished fourth as a team.

Wrestling

At the Class S State Championship on Feb. 19-20 at Plainville, Haddam-Killingworth was fourth out of 32 teams with 123 points. The Cougars boasted a pair of second-place grapplers in Grayson Adler (152-pound weight class, losing 17-5 in the final) and Mackay Revis (160, by 13-8 decision).

Also placing for HK were Matthew Jenkins (132, 4th, taking a 5-2 loss in the consolation final); Aidan Korper (145, 4th with a 9-3 defeat); David Wyzykowski (182, 4th, pinned at 7:08); and Malakai Maher (113, 6th, pinned at 4:50).

Boys’ Indoor Track

At the State Open at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven, the boys were tied for 19th with eight points. Scoring for HK was Cameron Garrelts as he was second in the 1,600 (in 4:22.61). Also competing were Ben Rakowski (12th in the 600 in 1:27.06); Andrew Meredith (13th for the 1,600 in 4:37.71); Garrelts (13th for the 3,200 in 9:55.09); the 4x400 relay of Shahzaib Khalid, Lucia Affragola, Ryan Argo, and Rakowski (12th, 3:38.59); and the 4x800 of Michael Callis, Jonah Spector, Meredith, and Rakowski (14th, 8:58.84).

Girls’ Indoor Track

For the State Open on Feb. 20, the girls finished tied for 33rd with two points. The 4x800 relay of Mary Coletti, Kelsey D’Amico, Lexie Bouthillier, and Maddie Brandon was fifth (9:56.33) to score those two points.

Also competing were Brandon (7th in the 3,200 in 11:20.47); Coletti (12th for the 3,200 in 11:41.62); and Veronica Chrzanowski (16th for the long jump, 15-2.25).

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

HK took an 83-75 loss to Hand on Feb. 16 and then an 84-58 defeat to Granby Memorial on Feb. 19.

Versus Hand, there were 12 top-three finishes in the second-place 200 medley relay (Jake Torello, Will Carlson, Evan Stock, and Jacques Goosen); second place for the 200 IM (Stock); second in the 50 free (Michael Morman), first in the 100 butterfly (Stock), tops in the 100 free (Morman); first (Torello, Stock, Goosen, and Morman) and second (Simon Brown, Nate Carlson, Parker Goodwin, Jonah Freeman) in the 200 free relay; first place (Torello) and second (Brown) in the 100 backstroke; tops in the 100 breaststroke (Will Carlson); and first place (Will Carlson, Goosen, Morman, and Torello) and second (Brown, Nate Carlson, Goodwin, and Freeman) in the 400 free relay.

Against Granby Memorial, 10 top-three finishes occurred in the second-place 200 medley relay (Torello, Will Carlson, Goosen, and Nate Carlson), first in 200 IM (Torello); first place for the 100 free (Morman); runner-up in the 500 free (Goosen); second in the 200 free relay (Morman, Goodwin, Freeman, and Goosen); tops in the 100 backstroke (Torello); first (Will Carlson), second (Nate Carlson), and third (Goodwin) in the 100 breaststroke; and first place in the 400 free relay (Morman, Goosen, Will Carlson, and Torello).
