East Haven Track Teams Place Great in States; Seksinski Wins at SCCs


Austin Thornberg finished second in the high jump at the Class M State Championship when he leaped 6 feet to earn eight points for East Haven on its way to a third-place finish.

Boys’ Indoor Track

East Haven had an excellent showing at the Class M State Championship with plenty of top-five finishes. As a result, the Yellowjackets claimed third place with 42 points scored. The top performance came from the 4x200 relay of Mike Griffith, Garrett Pates, Jay Donaldson, and McClay Marshall, who placed first with a time of 1:34.72 to earn 10 points. They barely edged the Hillhouse squad, which clocked in at 1:35. Griffith, Pates, Austin Thornberg, and Niam Coward all scored points individually to contribute to East Haven’s success. Griffith scored 16 points by finishing second in both the long jump and the 55 hurdles. In the long jump, he reached 20 feet-9.25 inches. In the hurdles, he finished third in the preliminary heat at 8:42 and then bettered his time to 8.17 in the final to claim second. Thornberg scored eight points with a second-place spot in the high jump. He leaped 6 feet, coming up two inches shy of Hillhouse’s Gabriel Abdul-Karim. Coward and Pates both placed fourth in their events to claim four points each for East Haven. In the shot put, Coward had a toss of 44-5.25 and Pates finished the 300 at 37.30. Other competitors included Donaldson in the 55 (12th, 6.99), plus Marshall in the 55 (28th, 7.15) and 300 (22nd, 41.38).

Girls’ Indoor Track

The Yellowjackets finished in seventh place at the Class M State Championship, scoring 20 points as a team. Megan Kikosicki scored 10 points by taking first in the 300. She finished at 43.18, a mere .15 seconds ahead of Sheehan’s Maddie Burns. The 4x200 of Kikosicki, Haley Onorato, Annie Coleman, and Emily Maffeo earned eight points by claiming second at 1:50.89. The other point scorer was Onorato, who placed fifth in the 55 hurdles. She earned her spot in the final heat with a time of 9.32 in the prelims and finished at 9.28 in the final. Other competitors were Kikosicki in the 55 (9th, 7.80); Coleman in the 55 (17th, 7.97); Katie Maffeo in the 1,000 (22nd, 3:26.69); Jazlynn Toussaint in the 55 hurdles (27th, 10.62); Molly Mazzucco in the high jump (10th, 4-8); and the 1,600 sprint medley relay of Coleman, Onorato, Emily Maffeo, and Katie Maffeo (14th, 4:50.96).

Wrestling

East Haven had 11 wrestlers at the SCC Championship and junior Tim Seksinski was victorious in the 195-pound weight class. The Yellowjackets finished in seventh place with 54.5 points.

Seksinski went against three competitors to claim the title. He won by pin at 1:11 over Xavier’s Christian Fragoso, defeated Van Docker of Hand by technical fall, 18-3; and then won a 6-4 decision over Jackson Seward of Branford in the final. Codey Borchert placed second in the 182 division. He won by an 8-0 decision over Guilford’s Zach Conover and then topped Joe Vail of Xavier 4-2 before being defeated 9-7 by Shelton’s Dan Peterson. Connor Gontarz finished third at 138 pounds. He defeated Ian Carpenter of Amity by 11-1 decision and was then pinned by Foran’s Jubilee Witte at 5:14 before fighting his way back in the consolation bracket to take third. In the third-place bout, he beat Carpenter by another 11-1 decision. Justin Fonacier finished fourth at 220, losing 5-4 to Branford’s Kyle Zalewski in the third-place matchup. Also wrestling for East Haven were Antonio Lieto at 113, Joe Milano at 120, Nick DeMorro at 126, Nate Leonardo at 145, Long Trinh at 152, Sebastian Montoya at 160, and RJ Purpora at 170.

Prior to the SCC Championship, East Haven took on Law and won 46-25. Eight different Yellowjackets saw wins, including pins by Leonardo, Borchert, Damien Benway, and Amadeo Bugatti. Lieto and Albert Doheny both were winners by forfeit. Seksinski won by a 17-1 decision and Gontarz was a winner by a 16-0 count.

Girls’ Basketball

The Yellowjackets mowed down SCC Oronoque foes Cross, Branford, and North Haven last week, putting themselves in position to split the divisional crown with Career. All the wins have improved the Easties to 16-3 overall and 6-1 in Oronoque play.

On Feb. 9 against Cross, East Haven was victorious, 57-40. It was a very even game for the Yellowjackets with Kylie Scholottman and Miranda Gladwin each scoring 11 points. Olivia Coyle scored eight, Dana Ross had seven, and Cailey Korwek added six. Ross pulled down eight rebounds and Gladwin dished out six assists.

On Feb. 11, the Yellowjackets topped Branford 52-38. Schlottman recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, plus Gladwin contributed 11 points. Coyle scored eight, Korwek added six, and Ross scored five and also grabbed eight boards.

The Yellowjackets remained red hot with a 52-34 win over North Haven on Feb. 12 to give East Haven 11 wins in its last 12 games. Ross led the charge with a double-double, recording 10 points and 14 rebounds. Coyle scored a team-high 11 points. Korwek finished with eight and Schlottman scored six as nine different Yellowjackets scored at least two points.

Boys’ Basketball

The rough stretch of divisional play continued for the Yellowjackets last week with losses to Branford, North Haven, and Cross. East Haven sits at 5-12 and needs to win out to qualify for states.

On Feb. 9, Branford topped East Haven 61-49. Nick Durso recorded his 1,000th career point and scored 14 in the game. Conor Reynolds scored 15 and Ryan Spano added 14.

North Haven then topped East Haven 74-64 on Feb. 12. Durso scored a team-high 20 points with Nate Furino pitching in 17 and Reynolds adding 13.

The week ended with an 84-56 loss to Cross. Reynolds and Spano both scored 13 points, plus Durso finished with 11 and Zack Zito had 10.
