T-Birds’ Girls’ Track Takes 5th at Shorelines; Boys Place 7th


North Branford’s Winnie Chan placed second at the Shoreline Championship in the high jump at 4 feet-10 inches and was followed by teammates Nina Robertson and Joselyn Streeto in third and fourth place, respectively.

Girls' Indoor Track

The T-Birds' girls' indoor track team competed at the Shoreline Conference Championship on Feb. 6 and finished in fifth place, scoring 54.5 points.

The top performances of the meet came from those in the high jump and the 55-meter dash as North Branford had superb performances, according to Head Coach Floyd Parness. North Branford's girls finished second, third, and fourth in the high jump behind Katie Seegart of Old Saybrook who topped out at 5 feet. Winnie Chan made Second Team All-Shoreline by taking second place in the high jump with a leap of 4 feet-10 inches, Nina Robertson followed with a jump of 4-8, and Joselyn Streeto finished fourth at 4-6, giving the Thunderbirds 18 points in that event. In the 55, Jess Zumbo made it to finals with a time of 7.82 in the preliminaries and placed third at 7.84 in the final to score six points. Catie Moran placed third in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.48 in the final after going 9.47 in the prelims.

Other individuals scoring points for North Branford included Jenna Bryden in the 300 (7th, 45.32); Ana Pavic in the 300 (8th, 45.90); Emily Muzyka in the shot put (7th, 28-3.5); Maggie Dulak in the 1,000 (8th, 2:23.60); Deanna Sgambato in the pole vault (6th, 7-0); and Chan in the long jump (8th, 14-5).

In the relays, the 4x800 team of Holly Dulak, Maggie Dulak, Jilian Damiani, and Olivia Hemstock finished sixth at 11:01.42; the 1,600 sprint medley relay team of Erika Chironno, Grace Little, Zumbo, and Maggie Dulak placed fifth at 4:46.91; the 4x200 relay group of Bryden, Little, Chrionno, and Zumbo finished fifth at 1:55.02; and the 4x400 squad of Sarah Criscuolo, Bryden, Little, and Holly Dulak placed fifth at 4:42.77.

Boys' Indoor Track

The North Branford boys' indoor track squad placed seventh at the Shoreline Conference Championship on Feb. 6 by scoring 25 points. Individual point scorers for North Branford were Jason Alaska in the 55 (4th, 7.01); Michale Madoule in the 600 (3rd, 1:29.41); Austin Gibilisco in the 600 (8th, 1:34.93); Michael Odell in the 300 (7th, 39.92); and Jacob Marshall in the 55 (8th, 7.24).

In the relays, the 4x200 team of Christian Diaz, Alaska, Marshall, and Odell finished seventh at 1:43.05; the 4x800 squad of Richard Hernandez, Isaac Cammarata, Gibilisco, and Madoule placed sixth at 9:31.99; and the 4x400 team of Alaska, Madoule, Gibilisco, and Odell took sixth at 3:56.40.

Boys' Ice Hockey

The Thunderbirds remained red hot with wins over Hand and Watertown-Pomperaug last week to improve to 9-3-1 for the season.

Against Hand on Feb. 3, North Branford went down early, but battled back for a 6-3 victory. Brian McKee led the charge on offense with a pair of goals, plus Adam Burkle, Matt Chamberlain, Nico Giatrelis, and Dominic Raccio each scored once. Burkle had a team-high three assists and Sean McKee had two helpers. John Lovelace earned the victory in goal, making 20 saves.

On Feb. 6, North Branford topped Watertown-Pomperaug 6-2, scoring a pair of goals in each period.

Boys' Basketball

North Branford lost two tight games last week and now sits at 3-11 for the season.

On Feb. 2, Old Saybrook outscored the T-Birds 21-12 in the fourth quarter to come away with a 52-47 victory. Brett Lequire scored 27 points for North Branford in the loss, while Jimmy Augur added 13. North Branford then battled Cromwell tough, but came up shy in a 50-48 overtime loss. Cromwell had a 24-16 lead at the half, but North Branford stormed back in the third quarter to tie it up and the two teams played an even fourth to force overtime with a 41-41 score at the end of regulation. Lequire scored a game-high 26 points and Augur added 16.

Girls' Basketball

The Thunderbirds dropped to 8-9 overall with losses to Cromwell and Old Saybrook last week.

On Feb. 2, North Branford was defeated by Old Saybrook 38-35 in a tight game where the T-Birds went 0-for-10 shooting from downtown. Sabrina LeMere led the way for North Branford with 12 points, plus Danielle Ramada scored nine and Morgan Violette added eight.

On Feb. 6, Cromwell got the better of North Branford, 63-44. Gabby Augur had a team-high 13 points with LeMere adding 11 and Violette scoring eight.

Austin Gibilisco finished eighth in the 600 to score for North Branford and was a member of two great relay teams at the Shoreline Championship.
