Guilford defeated New Milford 5-1 on Feb. 6 to improve to 9-3-1 with the road victory. The Indians jumped out to a 3-0 edge after a period with goals from Stephen Thibault (at 9:25 and 1:55) and John DeLucia (at 4:58). Thibault then capped off his four-goal performance with two more tallies in the third (at 5:00 and 3:50). Assisting on the day were Chris Cafiero (3), DeLucia (also with 3), Joe Neleber, Spencer Ryall, Rick Sandella, and Matt Clifford.
“We played our best period of hockey in the first period tonight and it resulted in three goals. New Milford played a spirited second period. By scoring, they closed within two and they pressured for more. Commitment to clearing pucks in the defensive zone, positioning on the defensive side of the puck, and competing for loose pucks is the best way to hold off the other team’s attack and turn things around,” said Head Coach Ralph Russo. “We did a better job of executing team defense in the third period and it resulted in limiting their possessions and creating some new scoring chances for us. The fourth goal was a big goal. It seemed to slow them down and it gave us a little more energy. Stephen had a big night with four goals. But it is also significant that all five goals were the results of passing and play making and that each of the five goals had two assists. It is hard to go on the road, especially on a long trip and play sharp. We had a very good first period and a decent third period. As we advance through the second half of the season, we need to push ourselves to achieve consistent offensive and defensive play for all three periods.”
Boys’ Basketball
Guilford took a 62-57 loss to Cheshire on Feb. 1 prior to a hard-fought, 57-54 overtime loss to Hand on Feb. 3. Jordan Krause led the scoring column versus Cheshire with 22 points, plus Noah Rubino sported a double-double with 20 points and 15 rebounds. Sam Dombroski also had a double-double night with 12 points and 10 boards.
Against Hand, Josh Krause, Jordan Krause, and Noah Rubino each scored a dozen points.
Boys’ Swimming and Diving
Branford-Guilford took a 96-89 defeat to Notre Dame-West Haven to drop to 4-2 on the season. Corey Gambardella posted victories in the 200 freestyle (1:48.93) and the 100 backstroke (55.25) to lead the Hornets, who also saw first-place finishes from Eric Weidman in the 200 individual medley (2:08.97), Cole Horton in the 50 freestyle (23.84), Kevin Jin for the 100 butterfly (56.68), and David Alstott in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.49). Additionally, the team’s 200 medley relay of Gambardella, Alstott, Jin, and Karosas took first at 1:42.37, while the 200 freestyle relay of Gambardella, Jin, Horton, and Thomas Shao swam a 1:33.95 for first place.
Girls’ Ice Hockey
Guilford (2-11) took a 6-1 loss to East Catholic-Glastonbury-South Windsor on Feb. 3. Alexa Petritz scored from Lily Singleton for the Indians (2-11) at 4:19 of the second period.
